As requested in this thread.
http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14658
I am posting some screenshots comparing the Voodoo2 Image quality to the Geforce 4 MX image quality. To be fair I ran each card in 1024x786 resolution (oddly I didn't even think the Voodoo2 supported that resolution but it works fine)
First Screenshot will Be Voodoo2, Followed by Geforce 4 MX in that order.

looks better with gf 4mx

Geforce MX 4xS FSAA of course...

Shiva on the Voodoo2.

And finally Shiva on the Geforce 4 MX 4xS FSAA

Are you running the GeForce 4 MX in 16-bit?
ChrisRay
March 25th, 2002, 12:09
Yup 16 bit. I never use 32 Bit color unless I have too.. Probably because of my wierd 3dfx Fanboyishness.
Kane

For a fair comparison, shouldn't you either
1) Run both of them indentical rez, identical FSAA settings, or
2) Run both of them at what everyone would run them in which would be:
>Voodoo 2: 800x600x16
>GeForce 4 MX: 1024x768x32 4xS FSAA

Well the reason I did it the way I did was to try and put them on equal terms, Not point out the obvious weakness of the Voodoo2 card.
And just curious, Whats wrong with doing the Voodoo2 at 1024x786 reso?
Kane
March 25th, 2002, 12:26
It's not the normal res you run a Voodoo at. It's fastest at 800x600

I was just trying to give the Voodoo2 a chance to actually compare!

j/k
To be honest I read multiple reviews saying the Voodoo2's max resolution was 800x600, maybe newer drivers allowed it go higher.
/shrug I just know it worked fine and the speed was 50 fps + for me which I guess was ok for a Voodoo2.
Edit: next time I post SS I'll take the v2 in 800x600 =D

It was just a suggestion. There is no need to cry...

LoL, did you really need to compare a relic of a display adapter to a 'new' one like this? Was there ever a contest here... really..? Now if it was GF4MX Vs. VooDoo 6000, then yah that would be something.
Still kinda funny though.

I would still use a Voodoo 2 if I had one. I love old Glide games (Screamer 2, Rally)

I was asked to in a previous thread.

GF4MX looks a lot better.
Kane
March 25th, 2002, 14:28
That's mainly owing to the 4xS FSAA. I rather think that that biases it in favour of said Video card.
SkyeHack

yeah try it without any FSAA and post some pics.

Then lets compare image quality on this Voodoo 5 5500 agp to the Geforce 4 mx shall we..

:) :)
2 voodoo2's were able to do 1024x768 :)

I'd love a V5 for older games which don't require stupid amounts of speed.

And here she is on the Voodoo2.
ChrisRay

Hey fivefeet thats a rather hard one to duplicate, Post something I can duplicate =D
I doubt there will be much difference as the v5 and Geforce 4 MX use the same method of FSAA.
Kane
March 25th, 2002, 17:36
The Voodoo one is slightly crisper to my mind.
ChrisRay

Personally I think they look identical except the G4 has some better colors in small areas like Shiva's hair.
I think the g4 has less jaggies, But that might just be an angle thing. There's not an extreme difference. I think the voodoo2 held up extremely well.

The Voodoo 5 uses the T-buffer to FSAA in hardware. It also uses a rotated grid to improve FSAA quality. It's the same technique (Multisampling), but the Voodoo 5's quality is still tops.

Here is one to compare with your Shiva shot.. THis is done at 800x600 with 4xFSAA..

I just wonder how much of a difference it could make?
The Geforce 4 line does have quite a few more options for Anti aliasing now right?
I was under the assumption that Voodoo5's still were limited to 2x and 4x.
Mayben newer drivers added more =D
No.. Newer drivers didn't add any new FSAA options.. It's always been only 2x or 4x for Voodoo 5's.. Anyways, most of those new FSAA options do little for psx emulation..

March 25th, 2002, 17:51
It's pretty close I'd say fivefeet, they both look really good.
4xS FSAA
edit: Btw you might wanna refresh this one as I posted the wrong pic the first time lol
ChrisRay
March 25th, 2002, 17:52
Well I was actually referring to Quincunx Anti aliasing which is a totally different kind of FSAA with the geforce 3 and g4 mx and ti cards.
I think the V5 is still slightly ahead of the g4 line. Maybe one day Nvidia will actually make it better.

March 25th, 2002, 17:58
Ok.. Here is a real comparison.. Since your shot is at 1024x768.. Lets see the same resolution on my voodoo 5 and 4xFSAA..
Kane
March 25th, 2002, 18:09
Give me that V5!!!
The Quincunx Antialiasing of nVidia was designed as a shortgut to provide better removal of edge jaggies without as much of an inherent performance drop. The problem is that it blurs everything.
ChrisRay
March 25th, 2002, 18:11
Here's Quincunx Antialiasing for Shiva,
Much blurrier as Lord Kane has pointed out.
ChrisRay
March 25th, 2002, 18:14
Yup , you'll notice the v5 smooths the legs of shiva slightly better in it's 4x.
4xS is close tho.
Btw kain., The Geforce 4 Line (Ti and MX do part of there FSAA in hardware, It's not a t-buffer but it's the accuview antialiasing engine) Which is supposively similar to the old technique exceptthe hardware Helps the proccess along speeding it up significantly or so they say. I still lose about 25% FPS with it enabled.
But my Geforce 2 MX 200 lost... like.. 50% FPS with it enabled at 4x...
maybe it is better, maybe it';s just a faster card.

March 25th, 2002, 18:29
...and I think I like the colors better
Shadow Lady
March 28th, 2002, 12:39
I think Voodoo 5 is better but if only can compare the two pics whit same color depth could be better ;P
ChrisRay
March 28th, 2002, 12:53
I assumed the v5 was in 16 bit color.
Kane
March 28th, 2002, 13:21
The V5 can do 32bit.
ChrisRay
March 28th, 2002, 13:22
Ya I know. was a bad assumption on my part. Not like it really matters, I don't wanna take anymore screenshots =D
