I am trying to get a course in 3D animation/character modelling, and I have been learning MAX R3.0 for a year, what do u lot think of my work, what do u hate/like and y? I need some constructive critism before I dare to show my full portfolio to a Uni!!
Here's a Basic one to start, just to test my lighting skills.
Thanku for any opinions you guys/girls have.

This one is a bedroom (no not mine), its quite old, and made in about 3 days, so alittle rushed....

I did two shots of this desert scene the car took about 3 weeks the rest of the scene was made in a week, the 2 shots are to show the scene, and then show the detail on the car, car first:

I don't mean to sound like a jerk (bringing this up all the time and everything), but if u just say the word, u can have many the active members of EmuForums sending the site that screwed u over with the bandwidth one or more emails a day until they agree to host u for the bandwidth u need at the price u were gonna pay. I have seen stuff like this work, several ppl in history have done it (send 1 letter a week or something to a place until they give in just to stop the spam).
btw, it's a truck, not a "car", but other than that, those look really good (great detail on the TRUCK)

no improvment needed

Hello fellow 3d modeler, if I may suggest one thing.. Try adding a larger contact area o the bottom of the tires. if you look at a car/truck the tires give a little on the bottoms. Also, in the second truck picture, try nudging the front shocks down a little. Or rather place the car body lower on the shocks, and add a stonger shadow underneath. Other than that. Looks great.!

@ Kr0nic_2000 : thanks!!!! :D
@ RobXMcCarthy : thanks for the suggestions, there pretty good ideas thanku, I shall work on the truck (I was tired) and make those alterations, just out of curioustiy how long have you been 3D modelling?
@ Mr Urt : Hmm I think I may of found a new host anyhow, but I am not gonna say much until I have it sorted, and it turns out far cheaper, not that I am letting off the previous host off, I am gonna be making some 'complaints' via certain people!
Thanks for the feed back, here's a few more, just to see what people think, and hopefully settle some nerve's when seeing this uni.......GULP oh and its nice to get some critism.
Here's some dice, basic, but made last nite in about 45mins

Meet Emma the Alien, just a simple character, she has a full IK chain, but in this shot she is in a neutral postition for general purpose use!!
CKemu
March 19th, 2002, 10:15
Something I made more valentines/e-cards style, it is a simple model of a heart and the word love, put into a 100% reflective box, with raytrace lighting, the material itself is a basic black shaded, 100% reflective surface

If u have noticed the green chair in my second post, this is basically a image of showing how it started low-poly and then was meshsmoothed into the finished result, the chair only took 10 mins to model/tweak.......
CKemu
March 19th, 2002, 10:23
hmmmm old, badly lit, but shows some of my earlier material, this is a piece I did to try and creat a modern art gallery, with appropriate piece of modern art centre stage, though don't ask me what its meant to be as I just plain made it up!! eheh
CKemu
March 19th, 2002, 10:26
an unfinished piece, the character is called Mr Blobus, and his PURPLE!!! but its work in prgress as he needs to be posed/ IK'd for an animation.

Next Gen Egg, basically I was ripping the P out of people who have a fear of genetic Engineering, so I was making a spoof on what some people believe will hppen if we use DNA editing etc.....
(sorry if anyone finds it offensive, if they disagree with Genetic Engineering)

Tex the Alien Dog, just a weird dog really!!
CKemu
March 19th, 2002, 10:36
This tropical scene was made using Vue d'Esprit 2.0, and took a day, I basically did this scene to test the program, what do u think, it was a first attempt, and to me not really modelling as it is more texture choosing and object placement

hey Ckemu, i must say that your works are very impressive.IMHO your works say more than thoundsand words, It is no way that the univesity not accpet you as its student.
Since you even know how to model 3d characters, i think your skills are up to the standard if not more.
p/s The bed room scene and the desert scene are my favourite. The weird dog and those 3d models also look good.

Emma the alien needs bigger boobs and a shorter skirt. I also have a request, could u pls make another ocean sceen like the one u made with Vue d'Esprit 2.0¿ if u do, pls make it wallpaper size (i.e. 1024x768, or even 1280x1024 if the image isn't too big to upload). thx
DANG! I wanna learn too be that good!
[edit]congrats on 1000 too!:)

Thanku everyone :) It's strange the ocean was made quite quicky, but I will make some more and post them for u Mr Urt or emial them if they are too large to attach (which I think they will b).
@ Tekky Tag, GOOD LUCK!! lol
@ Kr0nic_2000 : evil, mindu your sis will catch her death in a skirt that short!!
Well I am sending my portfolio off soon, hoping to apply for a BA or HND, this is the first time I have ever done a serious course in art!!
Nerves are gonna get me until I get my course......gulp, well here's hoping, I have only being doing this at home for a year on and off, I hope I will cut it!!

Hmm that is a good question!! I started using Byrce 2, and made some basic landscapes, but one day I 3D modelled a chair in byrce using booleans (yes I know Bryce is a landscape generator, but hey its got primatives) and a work m8 of my dads was impresside with what I could do in that program (a bad one at the best) and let meborrow his 3D Studio Max R1 disc to play with, I learnt a few basics and made some small scenes, I was working on a P300 with 32Mb of ram, so 2000+ polys was slllloooooooooww!!!, but I got into it and bought (yes actually paid) for max R3 (all £3500, took me months of saving and proving to my folks that I was serious, so they paid half), and self taught myself, it was a case of 'what does this button do??......AHHH!!' so I have spent the past year learning 3D art and now attempting basic animation etc, most of the tips for lighting and how things should look came from me walking outside looking at how things 'worled' reality, and getting the odd snipet of advice from the web and my dads m8, hmmm I remeber my first scene, a chrome sphere on a checkered floor!! oh and 1 omni light.....I was so proud!!
But that is it basically, and after seeing films like Toy Story, Shrek etc.....I want to get into film/game animation, so hence looking for a course, mindu I do have a faint recolection of liking 3D art when I had my Dads Atari ST, it had a prog called GFA Raytrace, hehehe it is soooo slow just to do 50 poly's!!!

I'd like yo do some landscapes and such for homebrew rpgs [namely mine]. What kind of program would you suggest?
CKemu
March 21st, 2002, 15:29
That depends on alot, ar we talking 2D enviroment or 3D enviroment, if ya doing a 2D (eg Parralax backgrounds, and or isemetric top down view etc then 3D studio Max with Photoshop or Vue D'esprite would do the trick, but if your doing one based on a 3D engine then max and some heavy texture work would do the job well, if you give me an idea of what your doing, I might be able to whip up some prototype ideas for u to see, I am intrigued to see what you have in mind...........oh and what language are youplanning on using/ are using, if its a modern one, i have some experienc with coding in C+, and making 'basic' 3D engines, but I am asuming this will be a sprite based game.

seems to me like 3d studio max and photoshop are the main programs to get (saw stuff on other forums too). I'll see if my uncle can get either of them :D . neways, have u ever done wallpaper based on a game¿ If u were maybe thinking about doing that, u should make some MGS2 wallpaper, cuz nobody has ne good stuff!
CKemu

Anouther program I will recommend is Paint Shop Pro 7, it is a fantastic easy to use programe that is greatly catching up with Photoshop, if not on a par with it for general purpose. Wallpapars for games I havn't thoguht about, and generally thats less modelling and more image merging, effects, put n paste........ maybe I will have ago, but I never have really bothered with that kinda thing, anyhow I have alot on my plate at the mo with uni/game programming/web-site etc.............. but who knows, oh and it looks like I am slowly catching up with u!!!
