You might have heard of James Cameron, he made that movie 'Avatar' that one time, Terminator too, directed Aliens and by the looks of things, loves to be underwater. With his brand spanking Australian made submarine, he plans to venture into the Mariana Trench.

Never heard of the deepest part of the world ever? Boy are you in for a surprise! In 1960, two super cool dudes went down into the trench, hung out for 20 minutes and then came back. James Cameron wants to do the same thing, except with 21st century technology and knowhow.
Why is this exciting? It's the Mariana Trench! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariana_Trench) The deepest part of the world at some 11 kilometres deep. There is a bounty of stuff down there begging to be explored and will open up new doors into understanding our world, expanding our scientific knowledge and finally finding out what kind of weird s*** is down there, how it survives, and how damn ugly they could be.

Cameron has been planning for a long time to venture down there and he means to hang out down there for a whole 6 hours! While he's down there he plans to collect soil samples, biological samples, set down traps and for home viewers take some video in kickass 3D with his fancy camera.
The goal of all this is not just to set records and do grandstanding dives. We want to push the envelope not only of scientific knowledge but also of engineering. Who knows what we might find. We are there to do science but also to bring the average person, who only imagines this, to show them what it’s like.
The engineering that has gone into the sub is magnificent, the whole machine has to withstand some 16,000psi per square inch on the hull, and when it's down there it will be squished by 2.5 inches. Considering this is an 11 tonne sub with some cool tech on board, that is a staggering amount of crushing pressure.
Cameron has yet to reveal the bill on this 8 year project (its probably really really big) but needless to say this is one amazing undertaking that is actually happening.
I cannot wait to see what's down in the trench!
