You might have heard of James Cameron, he made that movie 'Avatar' that one time, Terminator too, directed Aliens and by the looks of things, loves to be underwater. With his brand spanking Australian made submarine, he plans to venture into the Mariana Trench.

Never heard of the deepest part of the world ever? Boy are you in for a surprise! In 1960, two super cool dudes went down into the trench, hung out for 20 minutes and then came back. James Cameron wants to do the same thing, except with 21st century technology and knowhow.

Why is this exciting? It's the Mariana Trench! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariana_Trench) The deepest part of the world at some 11 kilometres deep. There is a bounty of stuff down there begging to be explored and will open up new doors into understanding our world, expanding our scientific knowledge and finally finding out what kind of weird s*** is down there, how it survives, and how damn ugly they could be.

Cameron has been planning for a long time to venture down there and he means to hang out down there for a whole 6 hours! While he's down there he plans to collect soil samples, biological samples, set down traps and for home viewers take some video in kickass 3D with his fancy camera.

The goal of all this is not just to set records and do grandstanding dives. We want to push the envelope not only of scientific knowledge but also of engineering. Who knows what we might find. We are there to do science but also to bring the average person, who only imagines this, to show them what it’s like.

The engineering that has gone into the sub is magnificent, the whole machine has to withstand some 16,000psi per square inch on the hull, and when it's down there it will be squished by 2.5 inches. Considering this is an 11 tonne sub with some cool tech on board, that is a staggering amount of crushing pressure.

Cameron has yet to reveal the bill on this 8 year project (its probably really really big) but needless to say this is one amazing undertaking that is actually happening.

I cannot wait to see what's down in the trench!

Now this is something to keep an eye on. Shoot, I wish I could join them, but the pressure at that depth...eh..

I never was fond of that man, but i gotta say i like this project and his attitude towards it (like take for instance not saying the money value, sort of sending the message that going there is what needs attention not what's being spent).

Funny thing is, when they went down originally in the 60's, they were never able to confirm if there is life down in the bottom as the seabed was disturbed as they went down and the water became too murky for them to see anything... This is also true for the oceans in general, we haven't really studied much of the deeper parts as it was long believed nothing could live below certain depth, these days though they believe there might be life even in the trench... Who knows, maybe we'll find real monsters down there!

Cool. When's he doing it, and when can we see the footage? I say him, but I bet someone else sits in the driving seat.

Actually, as far as I read about the sub, there's only room for one...

Yeah I know. I wouldn't be surprised if he sends someone else down there.

Why ? Being one of the few people who have actually seen the ocean floor is something awesome and its something that would drive a person to take a few risks.

Well if he does go himself, then respect to him. That's pretty hardcore.

Anyone know when this is happening?

This is something I would love to see. Hope everything goes as planned.

It's dive day y'all.

And just to illustrate how intense this is going to be:

Holy crap! he's planning to go all the way down there? thats ****ing huge!

I rather see someone else going down there tho, not him. He's a good movie director and well, i don't want nothing bad happening to him in his trip into "curiosity".

Curiosity killed the cat.

what if he dies down there?

If he dies it would suck since we lose a talented movie director.

Why take the risk? keep doing your job and let another guy take the trip.

why not make an unmanned underwater vehicle

I'd love to watch this s**t live. Doesn't matter if we're just watching some techie sit at a desk for 8 hours looking at a computer screen and monitoring the ocean, it'd be better than anything on TV.

fame and epeen.
if some other guy does it then james doesn't go down in history as being the 3rd guy to do it.
more people have been to the moon then the deepest part of the sea.

fame and epeen.

Why necessarily does it have to be just fame and epeen ? Maybe its not worth to you but i'd love to be the one of the guys who visited the ocean floor.

Cameron is pretty much a workaholic and an avid explorer, unlike the average Joe he has enough money to make his dreams a reality.

well not saying its the only-reason, but it probably is a strong motivation for him to go through with it.

Personally i can't really see it the same, its way more of a motivation to see first hand or to go someplace that none adventured before (or few adventured before) then just go for it for the fame.

true that may also be it.
either way (for fame or for personal ambition) it is a selfish journey.
must be nice to be rich enough to organize an 8 year project for you (and only you) to explore some unknown territory.
(not saying it isn't a cool project though)

99% (truth is i wanted to say 100% but i'll leave 1% out) of humans actions are selfish, if you look at it that way. :p

I wonder why the NASA (or the likes) never showed interest in going to the bottom of the sea.

Anyway good thing nothing bad happened to him.

*LARGE QUANTITIES OF BULLS**T*
What the f**k is this?! Piss off!

I just wanted to say that since you've posted this snicko, I've becoming increasingly fascinated by it and now I'm wishing I could be there! So thanks for that.

Anyway, turns out that Mr. Cameron is going to be recording a video log of the entire journey. I've read pretty much everything on the website and can't find anything relating to when his footage or video logs will be available for the public to watch. Does anyone have any information on this?
