View Full Version : I installed Ubuntu 11.04 but there's a major issue

Okay, so I followed the instructions to install Ubuntu 11.04 on my Chrome CR48, right? According to the person who wrote the instructions on how to install the previous, he specifically stated to follow Linux's install guide to upgrade the OS, and I did. So I installed it and it seemed to reboot just fine. HOWEVER, when I logged in, I saw no icons on the upper task bar, no programs would load (like Kega Fusion, black screen instead of static), heck I don't even see the time/date bar either. I do, however see it during the login screen, it only disappears after logging in. That doesn't make any sense, as there are numerous people who did the same thing to their CR48 netbooks. If they installed 11.04, why can't I? I'm 100% convinced something in the boot partition got screwed up, but like I said before, I followed the instructions exactly as they ought to be followed. Any suggestions or am I SOL? :hdbash:

Backup your documents and the likes, do a clean 11.04 installation and install the programs you want.
Updating from previous versions can lead to issues, especially when you use unsupported 3rd party packages.

I'm not an Linux expert, so I don't know how to reinstall, but upgrading like that can make the task bar disappear? I don't know if I can even locate the Terminal with invisible icons. Locations like "Places" "Administrator" and "System" aren't there.

Just boot using the ubuntu live cd and follow the instructions. Be sure to delete the old ubuntu partition(s), make new one(s) and install there.
Just make sure you don't touch any Windows partitions.

Reset the gnome panels to their original settings, logout and go back in.

Not sure how to do that either. I need to know how do I reinstall it from the Terminal. I don't need instructions on how to do it from a nonexistent CD/DVD Rom drive.

I'm on it. But, MAN is their website slow! 45kbps? Ouch, and I thought Comcast was supposed to be fast. Oddly enough, I'm not seeing anything about Chrome's cr48 on this page - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

Use unetbootin or the integrated liveusb maker. A clean install would still be nicer, but since only settings seemed broken here, you might wish to check back on them first.
For the terminal, you can bring it by using ALT+F2 then typing programs out (here 'terminal').
If only the gnome gui just died on you, you might wish to have a spare if just in case. The minimalist version of LXDE should do you fine (the full lubuntu desktop installs tons of unneeded packages).
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-core

I'll give that a shot and see what happens. I assume I run the "sudo apt-get install lubuntu-core" after I have the image on my USB drive, right? Or will I need to locate the LXDE files?
EDIT 11:46 - Some of the files could not be fetched/installed...*sigh*

I'm surprised that thing is already supported.
11.04 is all kinds of ****ty atm, I tried changing the settings in Compiz (the window manager in case you're unfamiliar) and it crashed entirely. And it still doesn't work. I"m probably gonna go back to 10.10 or preferably 10.04

The GUI itself is nonexistent, but the OS itself boot up and hasn't crashed. Take for example when I open up firefox (via a command) and I maximize the window, there are no minimize/maximize/close icons at all; they're nonexistent. I can still use alt+tab to switch between open windows, but like I said, there is no GUI. Any help? You'd think when Linux makes an official release, it wouldn't be such a pain in the a** to install. What should I do?

I guess what you're missing ain't the GUI but the window decorations? Try changing it, or reverting to some default. That was under theme settings or something.

But I see nothing at all, and just to make sure, I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on Virtual Box. On that program, I saw the GUI and I could actually access options. On the CR48 I don't see crap, making navigation impossible! I already looked there and didn't find anything. How many times do I need describe this issue!? My PC with Virtual Box = GUI is visible without having to change anything. CR48 = Nothing at all and didn't do any changes either; once I minimize something, I can't resize it or find it. THAT IS NOT NORMAL. HOW CAN I BE MORE CLEAR?

In the login screen, at the bottom, dont select the session "Ubuntu" (Unity), select "classic w/effects" or without effects.
If you installed lubuntu-core, the "Lubuntu" desktop should also be available (everything should work fine in there).
Metacity and panel might need a reset. Install Ubuntu-Tweak if you didnt already have it, these options are easily available from there (and you can backup your current settings too).

I didn't see any options with the words "w/effects" and one called just "Ubuntu classic" and after choosing it, it worked. Why didn't Linux WARN people about this, they like to give the impression that the boot partition got messed up. It works now. Sheesh, talk about PEBKAC. :hdbash: Now if I could only get Snes9x to work again....One zip file ends with "x86/64" and the other "i386".

The version I see is http://snesemu.black-ship.net/emus/snes9x/snes9x-1.53-gtk-81-i386.tar.bz2 and after I extract it, it won't open the executable. Double click and...nothing. Used the Synaptic package manager, installed the one that said Snes9x, but the version it listed was 1.52 and NOT 1.53. WTF? After doing that, still doesn't do jack squat. It worked in the LAST version of Ubuntu and now it won't load a window. Great.

Well, the only reason I could guess why Unity (and by extension Compiz) doesn't work is that the graphics driver your CR48 uses doesn't support the necessary extensions to run. Ubuntu Classic (GNOME 2) doesn't utilize the graphics card the way Compiz/Unity does, so that should work on pretty much anything.

It should work, the CR-48 uses integrated Intel video. The last three versions of Ubuntu that I've tried on my netbook had fully functional Unity/Compiz interfaces, and it has near-identical integrated graphics.

Just backup your documents and try a clean install like PsyMan suggested. That means, clean the drive from partitions and let the new installation create them anew.

The problem with the HDD is that it contains both Chrome OS and Linux Ubuntu partitions. I wouldn't know the first thing about putting both OSes back on the HDD. I'd probably have to find a way to completely erase the data (not that there's really anything I need to backup), reinstall Chrome OS first, then from Chrome OS, get into the Terminal and type the necessary commands (while being logged in with the name Chronos) that download Ubuntu and it should be installed. Whether pressing space bar during the boot sequence is the way to do it or not, I have no idea. Any guides for reinstalling Chrome OS via USB stick? When I download Linux, should I follow this guy's tutorial? Chrome OS on the Google Cr-48: Ubuntu 11.04 for the Cr-48 is ready! (http://chromeos-cr48.blogspot.com/2011/04/ubuntu-1104-for-cr-48-is-ready.html) Times like this I consider myself to be VERY noobish, but I am learning more and more about Linux everyday.

Debian packages? You mean these? https://launchpad.net/~bearoso/+archive/ppa I don't see any releases 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I PMed BearOSO about it but haven't gotten a response yet. As far as Fusion is concerned, I don't see any debian links for that either.

So I'm SOL....right? That doesn't help me, now does it? There's no guide on installing Debian on a Chrome CR48, so, I can't do that. I posted this thread to get help running emulators on Ubuntu and NOT to hear why it sucks. I couldn't care less on what's better or not. Like I said before, they worked on 10.10 Maverick, but not on Natty Narwhal. WHAT CAN I DO TO GET THESE THINGS WORKING AGAIN!!? I'm not wanting to start an argument, but these responses are NOT the reason I came here. The only thing preventing me from putting XP on this thing is the possibility of ruining the BIOS, as that has to be flashed.

Dont use the effects-enabled version of the Classic interface, go with the 'no effects' one.
For emulators, go with other more consistently reliable PPAs.

It IS on "no-effects" and I don't know of any more up-to-date PPA's. This is the one on the Snes9x-gtk site, if you have a better link, I'd like to see it. And since I'm no the no-effects mode, I'm SOL, right?!!
To sum up
I don't know of any reliable/consistent PPAs
I don't use Ubuntu Classic with effects
I have the most recent GPU drivers
I have been able to use these very emulators in 10.10
I don't have nearly the same level of knowledge concerning Linux like you do
I don't know why I even bothered posting here in the first place since I'm getting the runaround.
If no one can give me advice for getting an emulator to run on no-effects Ubuntu without having to
endure endless hours of Hell, then, well, I'll just give up.

Thanks :D Quick question, is there any way to stop Snes9x from stuttering with the audio? I've tried ALSA, SDL, Pulse Audio, Open Sound System and they all skip every 30s or so, and the input frequency is set at 31620Hz. Kega Fusion still gives me a blank screen and no menu. WTF? Is this netbook not powerful enough?

I'm afraid that might be the case. Make sure the audio buffer settings are correct, as well, and that you are not using any extra audio effects that might be slowing it down.

I'm just confused what the ideal output mode is; ALSA, SDL, OSS, Port Audio? To this day I'm not even sure what the least buggy version is. Heck, I can't even get output on OSS. Is there a way to update the GPU and SPU drivers?
