Forget everything you think you know about Unicorns, pull out a pen and paper and prepare to take notes on the true nature of the Unicorn. The Unicorns that you know about, the ones that are robotic, live in a flamboyant paradise with dolphins and faeries, the ones that poop rainbows when they jump, this is nothing but a front. Just like barber shops in Harlem are a front to sell drugs, Robot Unicorn Attack was merely a front to disguise the true nature of the unicorn, a decadent beast that will strike fear into the hearts of small children, a beast that will haunt your soul for all eternity, a terrifying stallion that shuns any form of majesty, for Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal is an insight into the true nature of the beast.
Robot Unicorn Attack features a fearful Robot Unicorn who runs across the most vile, brutal landscape you could ever possibly imagine, complete with rivers of fire, imposing mountains, pentagrams, other robotic animals that are on fire and a vicious red hue over everything as the beastly Unicorn thunderously traverses the landscape in exactly the same way as his fruity rainbow cousin. It should be as awesome as the first game, a smash hit that managed to capitalise on the sheer fruitiness as you are bombarded with pansy imagery, and a Unicorn that blasts his way with reckless abandon and violence as the level unfolds. The Heavy Metal version however does not capitalise on this irony, which leaves the title feeling rather a little dull.

It's like Medeival times...
The whole brilliant point of Robot Unicorn Attack was behind all the sissy visual and audio overtones lay serious and challenging gameplay juxtaposed with explosions which contrast so heavily with the premise of a Unicorn that poops rainbows, only for him to become decapitated when he fails mission. The Heavy Metal version is full of violent imagery, bones, fire, explosions, pentagrams instead of the crystals you smash in the first game, the whole premise has no contrast, no cheeky undertones, the whole thing is just far too predictable and does not evoke the same emotions as the first.
Something that's good instead of death, like...hamburger time
As a dark version of the original however, [Adult Swim] have done the best they possibly could with the whole Heavy Metal angle, especially with the music of choice with an altered version of Blind Guardian's operatic song 'Battlefield'. It adds a touch of lunacy, and helps this version along quite a bit, however the key issues with the concept still remain.
The only other possible issue with the game is that the level is exactly the same as the original, which is good, as top scorers will have the ability to battle for top of the leaderboard again, without the option of having a remixed or different level though the game can feel rather samey, fortunately the small asking price of $0.99 means that you can get the game cheaper than the original, and it is an excellent pricepoint for a reskinned game which is exactly the same gameplay wise.

The fact this version exists at all is tremendous, don't get me wrong, the game is still as frustrating, infuriating and playable as ever. Reaching for those enormous high scores is still as entertaining as the first, and you will amaze yourself at how your reaction times will drop as you engross yourself into the gameplay, however this edition does not excite any where near as much as the original one did and as a result leaves the whole thing feeling a little hollow.
