I read something on a brazilian gaming site about a coment the Morgan Stanley bank made about the xbox and one point stood out; if the game prices drop, the entire gaming industry will collapse. IMO, it will go like this: The prices of the games drop due to competition, then they sell at first but as the budget of the softhouse will go lower, the games will become mediocre and stop selling, then the prices drop again and the games become even more medicre, the gamers will not buy the crappy games and the industry will collapse. Don't you agree?

As games get cheaper, piracy will be reduced to a certain extent. This will increase the revenues of the games companies.
Nothing is completely stagnant, but after any turmoil, it will return to the status quo.

Hmm, I wasn't taking piracy into account. I mean the games will have to drop prices to make them more competitive.

As long as Nintendo is around, game quality will be high. That's what Nintendo is all about. But seriously, I don't think that you should take much meaning into this. Game sales are as high as ever.

There isn't any games that drop their price to make it competitive as far as I know. :(

Well i think the prices will stay the same as they are now. Anly thing that my happen is that there will be less producers becouse off the competitive

as long as there are people like us, the game industry will live. i would appreciate a price drop since i rarely buy a game at full price when it first comes out. the last game i ever bought at full price was Diablo 2 :LOD. i don't have enough money to spend $50 (US) on a new PC game.

That's BS. It's a law of supply and demand. The supply keeps increasing, but so do the prices. Demand is falling because of a combination of high prices and increasingly more unoriginal games. Why get some new game when the exact some concept has been done - and better - in an earlier game?

Look at this perspective, if the games offer increase the price drops (market), then the softhouses will start to work with a lower budget as the installed base isn't that big right now, and make bad games, wich no one in their right state of mind will buy, and the sales will decrease forcing the prices to go up, wich will cause a crash in the gaming industry. 1984 anyone? Atari crashed because of this at that time. Bad games=less money

of course the game industry may collapse, of course, the sun could collapse too...and so could the stock market. the only thing I can think of that will never collapse is the porn industry, but that's just cuz the world will always have perveted ppl

On the other hand, even such a dive in game quality can be completely reveresed by the release of one good game. Naturally, it has to be one impresive game, but what do we know about the beginings of FF.

Making a good FF requires some hefty amount of money, and if someone doesn't give the money (like nintendo just did with square) the softhouse won't have enough money for a good game and flood the market with bad ones ;)

True, but, hopefully, for their own good, the company would have good enough marketers to see a drop in enough time to get together a good game. In the end, anything is possible, but i just dont see squaresoft or any of its competitors droping like rocks anytime soon.

by the time they do fall, we'll be too old (or dead) to care anyways.

What's more likely is that they will gradualy fade out of the lime light until they dissapear without anyone noticing

> pokemon channel!

We're more likely to see a DBZ channel. That's practically what the Cartoon Network turned into.

I'm concerned about what fascinations might replace video games. All these people who attack the industry don't seem to realize they serve a very important purpose...

As I said, it happened in 1984. And we all know that history repeat itself (even faster nowadays).

>Probably more reality tv shows...

I wonder if they are really true... ;)

Exodus: Calm down, the industry won't really end, it will just crash ;)

if it crashes, then maybe the laws of nature will take effect. when a forest fire occurs, it kills everything allowing a new beginning with very furtile land, so maybe thats what would happen with gaming!

Exodus: In 1986 (I guess) nintendo started it's rule (so I guess something is going to happen when the gaming industry crash once more :p)

Nah, TM is slightly different from the general dating simulation genre because more than the general lurkers play it (the same goes for Sakura Taisen).

Fou-lu
March 10th, 2002, 00:50
Phew! That's nice to know :D
What are the general lurkers playing, just curious :heh:

Ryos
March 10th, 2002, 00:55
The lurkers are the extremely creepy looking people (think Me-Mania in Perfect Blue) who are playing dating simulation games not for any entertainment value or training or anything like that, but rather because that's as close to any real companionship as they're going to get. Basically they are every bit of the negative comments attributed to the word otaku in Japan.
