Most o' the modeling I did myself. some was donated by friends etc etc. All fully mapped in 3d studio max. First is of "paradise" I used base bryce skymapping, and world coordinates for the background.

This one isn't as good :( I was trying all different types of modeling at once and it got kinda messy :p

February 22nd, 2002, 03:29
The next was a lord of the rings theme. Was going to put the saying in the center... Done using lathe modeling in 3dstudio max, and textured using a tarnished gold material. then aplying a volumetric effect in a torus around it.

This was a study on material properties, I did this one with a claymation look, basically "flat" textures.

This was a study I did on material properties, reflection/refraction mapping. "Picture perfect"

This was a landscape test, just for practice. "strange ice"

Hey could you make a pic of a sword with the tip of it standing on water. Of course if you have the time

Nice work!
I think there is a 'freeware' version of 3dsmax. Isn't it called 3d studio LE or personal edition? They brought it out so people could make their own quake models... don't have a url.
If you're interested in learning Maya, theres a free access version of the program here. (http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/Tmpl/Maya/html/index.jhtml?page=/en/Community/Special/maya_ple/index.jhtml&style=normal)

Sure, I'll do the sword thing, It's just that I have been busy with schoolwork... Now what kind of background do you want. And what kind of sword? katana? Broadsword?
RobXMcCarthy
February 27th, 2002, 01:37
Yeah, it isn't freeware though. I got it via a 3d modeling class at my school. We got it for taking the elective. It's 3 thousand dollar software . Joke's on them.

keep off the piracy innuendos k? thxbye
RobXMcCarthy
February 27th, 2002, 02:39
What??? Acctually the school bought every copy...
Well they bought one copy, and 350 liscences.. The origional copy cost 3500 dollars. But each liscence cost only $50, so they were allowed to install it on 350 other machines.. And gave a copy out to every student taking the class. It was 100% legal... there was not piracy involved.

LoL, just dug this up, the Birdcage in the Paradise pic was origionally this tower.
But I cut it out because I accidently made it a little too much like a certain tour eiffel.

The sword pic was cool.
Try making a very long sword with a narrow blade
()
!
!
!
---
!
!
!
And make the blade a little round sort of like a katakana masamune thingy. Off course take your time. And don't mind me.
Like the one you made . the blade should be a little more round
RobXMcCarthy
February 27th, 2002, 20:35
So like a Katana?
This was just a test run for the basicsof the desig.. the wake needs a lot of work, and I have to find a better way to blend it with the water. Because that's not working... Looks like a separate thing.
And the sword only took 5 minutes to model :p It's just crap, Was just working on the scene.
Also thinking of adding in a lightning bolt instead of the ethereal spotlight.. But I don't know how to make something it's own light source... If anyone knows I'd appreciate the info.
RobXMcCarthy
February 28th, 2002, 02:06
This is a little better... But katanas are boring... they are so simplistic.. ... Better used in good light... Thhis what you were talking about???

K. Here is one more of that same type scene...
Total Render time 1 hour 34 minutes. (yipes)
Pixels Rendered: 480,000
Pixels Anti Aliased: 53,132
Primary Rays: 2.89 million
Total refraction rays: 1.76 trillion
Ray hits: 1.36 trillion
Ray misses: 5.94 trillion
Total intersect attempts: 7.36 trillion.
here it is: "Nova's Edge"

February 28th, 2002, 02:57
Hrmm, btw. The origional BMP of this was 2.54 MB, so this image is much degrated :( But it is not logical to put a 2.54 mb image on a forum board.

i prefer one with a really big blade with a blue/siver tone in the blade and a nice stripe down the middle
RobXMcCarthy
February 28th, 2002, 04:50
What kind though? Katana? if so, I could do that.

The kind of area I'd like to do my homework in.
lol.
Oh well. Just playing around, with modeling in other programs. LWO, 3ds, MAX, OBJ. Max is the best so far.

Very nice Rob. Any chance you may render some at 1600x1200? I would love having a few of those as wallpapers.:)
Of course, at ~1 1/2 hours for these renders I shudder to think of the time needed for high-res shots.:eyes:

February 28th, 2002, 10:37
How do you do the modeling, in 3dmax and the rendering in bryce?
RobXMcCarthy
February 28th, 2002, 11:31
Well you model what you want in Max, then you do export model. Or just save the model in max format. Then you open up bryce and go to file, import model and open up the file.
What one do you want at 1600 by 1200, I'll just start it up over night.

Here's one that I'm not especially proud of. Just wanted to use that Katana again =P.

you have A LOT of talent can u make some of these into wallpapers, they would look really nice
RobXMcCarthy
March 1st, 2002, 02:06
hehe, thx, and sure I'll make some into wallpaper.
Tell me what ones.
ATM I'm rendering nova's edge at superfine aa quality @ 1600 by 1200. That is usually the max for desktops so you can scale it down to whatever you want.
Just post what ones you want made into wallpaper, or any new things you want me to make and I'll see what i can do. Each one takes about 4-6 hours at 1600 by 1200 though so only one per night.
RobXMcCarthy
March 1st, 2002, 02:17
Acctually, only that Nova's edge pic will take a really long time.
It uses a lot of volumetrics like the halo, the spraying water, and the sword itself uses a lot of reflection mapping... The ball at the top of the handle is a glass like material so it does a reflection/refraction map of the volumetrics causing it to take a REALLY long time...
The othres should only take 2 hours at 1600 by 1200.

Hrmm, I'll make a temp Website to host the pics on once they are complete. I'' havem available in BMP (prolly about 3 mb) and Jpeg (Prolly about 700 kb)

lol Glad you like it :)
If you want something that has a more simplistic look you can use one of these.
This one is ony a pure white background, so oyu can change the screen background to white and the icons will blend in nicely.
Recca
March 2nd, 2002, 12:13
Not to be mean but i like the dark one better.
But try putting a cool flame background behind the white sword
Making it like a Holy sword or something and put a light down the sword
RobXMcCarthy
March 2nd, 2002, 12:13
And if that is too bright for you, set your screen background to black and try this one out.

March 19th, 2002, 19:46
Been very busy, schoolwork, etc.... Haven't had a lot of time for forum games. ;) I am having trouble with rendering in World Builder though... ::sigh:: It says I am out of system memory... if 756 mb of ram is not enough to run this program... I give up... I tried putting some in from my other comp, got it up to that (756) and still the same message... It must be a processing error, probably rendering multiple instances of the rendering tool for use on servers..
