View Full Version : My Fun w/ 3d studio max =P
February 22nd, 2002, 03:23
Most o' the modeling I did myself. some was donated by friends etc etc. All fully mapped in 3d studio max. First is of "paradise" I used base bryce skymapping, and world coordinates for the background.
February 22nd, 2002, 03:25
This one isn't as good :( I was trying all different types of modeling at once and it got kinda messy :p
February 22nd, 2002, 03:29
The next was a lord of the rings theme. Was going to put the saying in the center... Done using lathe modeling in 3dstudio max, and textured using a tarnished gold material. then aplying a volumetric effect in a torus around it.
February 22nd, 2002, 03:32
This was a study on material properties, I did this one with a claymation look, basically "flat" textures.
February 22nd, 2002, 03:36
This was a study I did on material properties, reflection/refraction mapping. "Picture perfect"
February 22nd, 2002, 03:38
This was a landscape test, just for practice. "strange ice"

February 22nd, 2002, 03:40
nice work dood those look good ;)
February 22nd, 2002, 03:41
one of my first attempts at character modeling, I know I still need to work at it, it's not very good  .
February 22nd, 2002, 03:43
This was a study on the refraction principles of light through glass.

Ok this has to be the coolest program. is it freeware

3D Studio MAX is commercial software. It is not freeware. Website: http://www.discreet.com/products/3dsmax/
February 26th, 2002, 17:25
DANG:eyes: :dead: . THANX anyway
February 26th, 2002, 17:26
Hey could you make a pic of a sword with the tip of it standing on water. Of course if you have the time
February 26th, 2002, 22:10
I think there is a 'freeware' version of 3dsmax. Isn't it called 3d studio LE or personal edition? They brought it out so people could make their own quake models... don't have a url.
If you're interested in learning Maya, theres a free access version of the program here. (http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/Tmpl/Maya/html/index.jhtml?page=/en/Community/Special/maya_ple/index.jhtml&style=normal)
February 27th, 2002, 01:23
Very nice shots. I never could figure out how to use the program, so I deleted it.
February 27th, 2002, 01:35
Sure, I'll do the sword thing, It's just that I have been busy with schoolwork... Now what kind of background do you want. And what kind of sword? katana? Broadsword?
February 27th, 2002, 01:37
Yeah, it isn't freeware though. I got it via a 3d modeling class at my school. We got it for taking the elective. It's 3 thousand dollar software . Joke's on them.
February 27th, 2002, 02:11
keep off the piracy innuendos k? thxbye
February 27th, 2002, 02:39
What??? Acctually the school bought every copy...
Well they bought one copy, and 350 liscences.. The origional copy cost 3500 dollars. But each liscence cost only $50, so they were allowed to install it on 350 other machines.. And gave a copy out to every student taking the class. It was 100% legal... there was not piracy involved.
February 27th, 2002, 04:15
Here is a crappy sword in eater pic I just made. I realize that it needs a LOT of work. But just giving it a start, see what i could comeup with.
February 27th, 2002, 04:17
lol, think what you want of this one. It just came to me one day... It's wierd I know... :eyes: :dead:
February 27th, 2002, 04:19
February 27th, 2002, 04:24
LoL, just dug this up, the Birdcage in the Paradise pic was origionally this tower.
But I cut it out because I accidently made it a little too much like a certain tour eiffel.
February 27th, 2002, 18:09
The sword pic was cool.
Try making a very long sword with a narrow blade
And make the blade a little round sort of like a katakana masamune thingy. Off course take your time. And don't mind me.
Like the one you made . the blade should be a little more round
February 27th, 2002, 20:35
So like a Katana?
This was just a test run for the basicsof the desig.. the wake needs a lot of work, and I have to find a better way to blend it with the water. Because that's not working... Looks like a separate thing.
And the sword only took 5 minutes to model :p It's just crap, Was just working on the scene.
Also thinking of adding in a lightning bolt instead of the ethereal spotlight.. But I don't know how to make something it's own light source... If anyone knows I'd appreciate the info.
February 28th, 2002, 02:06
This is a little better... But katanas are boring... they are so simplistic.. ... Better used in good light... Thhis what you were talking about???
"The Master Blade"
February 28th, 2002, 02:55
K. Here is one more of that same type scene...
Total Render time 1 hour 34 minutes. (yipes)
Pixels Rendered: 480,000
Pixels Anti Aliased: 53,132
Primary Rays: 2.89 million
Total refraction rays: 1.76 trillion
Ray hits: 1.36 trillion
Ray misses: 5.94 trillion
Total intersect attempts: 7.36 trillion.
here it is: "Nova's Edge"
February 28th, 2002, 02:57
Hrmm, btw. The origional BMP of this was 2.54 MB, so this image is much degrated :( But it is not logical to put a 2.54 mb image on a forum board.
February 28th, 2002, 04:04
i prefer one with a really big blade with a blue/siver tone in the blade and a nice stripe down the middle
February 28th, 2002, 04:50
What kind though? Katana? if so, I could do that.
February 28th, 2002, 05:24
The kind of area I'd like to do my homework in.
Oh well. Just playing around, with modeling in other programs. LWO, 3ds, MAX, OBJ. Max is the best so far.
February 28th, 2002, 05:37
Here are some pics of the developement stages.
Here's the wireframe screen in low detail.
February 28th, 2002, 05:40
Here is a look at the material editor in Bryce 5.
February 28th, 2002, 06:22
Very nice Rob. Any chance you may render some at 1600x1200? I would love having a few of those as wallpapers.:)
Of course, at ~1 1/2 hours for these renders I shudder to think of the time needed for high-res shots.:eyes:
February 28th, 2002, 10:37
How do you do the modeling, in 3dmax and the rendering in bryce?
February 28th, 2002, 11:31
Well you model what you want in Max, then you do export model. Or just save the model in max format. Then you open up bryce and go to file, import model and open up the file.
What one do you want at 1600 by 1200, I'll just start it up over night.
February 28th, 2002, 11:33
Here's one that I'm not especially proud of. Just wanted to use that Katana again =P.
"The samurai's final stop"
February 28th, 2002, 17:20
Okay that cool sword with the red ring in the sky was soo cooool.
Try using a sword with a big blade. kinda like clouds ultima weapon
February 28th, 2002, 20:29
I'll resubmit that one @ 1600 x 1200 for desktops
February 28th, 2002, 21:14
You mean Ultimate weapon like this?
February 28th, 2002, 21:20
I always pictured this sword having an internal light type look, here is a night shot of it. The halo around it is just for effect.
March 1st, 2002, 00:43
you have A LOT of talent can u make some of these into wallpapers, they would look really nice
March 1st, 2002, 02:06
hehe, thx, and sure I'll make some into wallpaper.
Tell me what ones.
ATM I'm rendering nova's edge at superfine aa quality @ 1600 by 1200. That is usually the max for desktops so you can scale it down to whatever you want.
Just post what ones you want made into wallpaper, or any new things you want me to make and I'll see what i can do. Each one takes about 4-6 hours at 1600 by 1200 though so only one per night.
March 1st, 2002, 02:17
Acctually, only that Nova's edge pic will take a really long time.
It uses a lot of volumetrics like the halo, the spraying water, and the sword itself uses a lot of reflection mapping... The ball at the top of the handle is a glass like material so it does a reflection/refraction map of the volumetrics causing it to take a REALLY long time...
The othres should only take 2 hours at 1600 by 1200.
March 1st, 2002, 03:16
Hrmm, I'll make a temp Website to host the pics on once they are complete. I'' havem available in BMP (prolly about 3 mb) and Jpeg (Prolly about 700 kb)
March 1st, 2002, 06:29
That sword was so cool. Could you make it standing on water.
March 1st, 2002, 11:26
sure, you want it to be dark or light?
March 1st, 2002, 11:46
March 1st, 2002, 20:29
the dark one at 1024x768
March 1st, 2002, 23:11
K it's almost done, but the jpeg will be about 600-700 KB, so I'll make a quick webpage to host it along with the other high res ones.
March 1st, 2002, 23:23
Just found some older ones I did. They were uploaded to my website lol...
This was one that I did for a freeshard, You know from Ultima Online. Sadly it never launched...
March 2nd, 2002, 00:32
Anyone know of a good host that I can use for these wallpaper files. Preferably that allows the use of FTP transfers and does not require you to use their HTML creation methods.
March 2nd, 2002, 01:27
Well here's a little teaser untill I can find a server to host the high quality image. But before I do that, is this what you wanted?
March 2nd, 2002, 01:28
March 2nd, 2002, 07:20
THIS IS SO COOL ROBXMCARTHY
March 2nd, 2002, 12:09
lol Glad you like it :)
If you want something that has a more simplistic look you can use one of these.
This one is ony a pure white background, so oyu can change the screen background to white and the icons will blend in nicely.
March 2nd, 2002, 12:13
Not to be mean but i like the dark one better.
But try putting a cool flame background behind the white sword
Making it like a Holy sword or something and put a light down the sword
March 2nd, 2002, 12:13
And if that is too bright for you, set your screen background to black and try this one out.
"The Ultimate Weapon"
March 2nd, 2002, 12:14
WOW THEY ARE REALLY GREAT:yawn:
March 2nd, 2002, 12:26
I was going to make strands of golden light circle down the white sword in a cyclone like fashion, so I'll do that next. :)
March 2nd, 2002, 12:29
Check em out i just tried em
March 2nd, 2002, 12:30
It's too bright
March 2nd, 2002, 12:32
I like em but the last is too bright
March 2nd, 2002, 12:44
Yeah i see what you mean. Right click on the desktop go to Properties, then go to appearance and where it says item scroll down to desktop, then chose the color black, and the icons will blend right in :)
March 2nd, 2002, 12:46
like this, see what I mean :)
March 2nd, 2002, 13:04
This is what happens
March 2nd, 2002, 13:08
Well I meant for when you are using the black one lol. Use white for the white one. ;)
March 2nd, 2002, 13:14
March 2nd, 2002, 20:33
March 2nd, 2002, 20:47
March 3rd, 2002, 04:54
I have no clue why I did this... It' supposed to be a mythical egyptian scene that mysteriously appeared on a table... But mainly looks like crap. The texture clarity is lost due to lack of good light.
March 3rd, 2002, 05:55
It's really squareish.:(
March 4th, 2002, 20:35
thanx for the wallpapers they look really nice:)
March 19th, 2002, 03:57
Hoi hoi there lads and lassies. I just got a copy of Amteck Worldbuilder 3.0, so as soon as I get over the rather steep curve I'll post some pics of it in action. A rather nice program.
March 19th, 2002, 04:06
Oh and also, Here is Nova's edge in wallpaper format.. I'll get "Paradise" out there asap :). enjoy.
March 19th, 2002, 05:46
Ohh and where have you been haven't seen you for a long time:confused:
March 19th, 2002, 19:46
Been very busy, schoolwork, etc.... Haven't had a lot of time for forum games. ;) I am having trouble with rendering in World Builder though... ::sigh:: It says I am out of system memory... if 756 mb of ram is not enough to run this program... I give up... I tried putting some in from my other comp, got it up to that (756) and still the same message... It must be a processing error, probably rendering multiple instances of the rendering tool for use on servers..
March 19th, 2002, 19:50
"paradise" in wallpaper format... Long time to render this one..
March 19th, 2002, 19:55
Good to have ya back. well anyway i think the first paradise looked better. the ship has some squares/pixels visible
March 19th, 2002, 20:00
Just tried the nova edge
