View Full Version : Dreamcast fans are retarded, shows Sega study

Tokyo, Japan – The history of videogames is littered with triumphs and tragedies but none grasp the gaming public’s imagination the way the demise of a console does. From the Atari 7800 to the Neo-Geo great and terrible machines have been relegated magnavox odyssey
to history as they variously outstripped expectations or were woefully behind the market. Though the days of failed machines are likely now gone with the three-headed dragon that dominates the marketplace those machines that have passed on into history, continue to rule the hearts of many gamers, with one particular machine holding an extra special place.
Released to the world in 1999 to massive acclaim and even more massive sales the Sega Dreamcast was without a doubt far ahead of its time. Integrating cutting edge graphics, online gaming, and an enviable library of dreamcast logo
games the Dreamcast was to be the true next generation of gaming. Less than two years later the machine was dead and Sega, which had helped shape the modern console, was relegated to a software manufacturer. Now though, ten years after its release many gamers are still mourning the death of their beloved machine in ways no other console has seen. Now a new study conducted by Sega into the nature of those Dreamcast lovers indicates that their incredible attachment to machine may in fact be due to serious mental illness, causing them to implore people to just let the machine rest in peace.
“We have conducted a very thorough study of Dreamcast players and in many cases shenmue
we the people with the strongest attachment show serious mental and emotional issues. Some have even shown signs of cognitive issues bordering on retardation,” said Sega spokesperson. “We at Sega all lamented the demise of the Dreamcast as we all had great affection for the machine. We have gotten over it though and moved on and we would like to encourage all of our fans to do the same. The machine was great but it’s time has passed and we want people to enjoy the benefits of the wonderful new machines currently on the market rather than spend time with a dead machine.”n64 goldeneye
Nintendo recently conducted a similar study to try and root out the cause of the continued affection for the twelve-year old Nintendo 64 title ‘Goldeneye’. The results of that study were kept secret but insiders indicate that many of the players show signs of serious mental retardation.
“Nostalgia is a very strong thing and oftentimes it can lead to odd and even destructive behaviour. Death is a part of life and people need to learn that in order to move on and live happy and healthy lives. We can’t continue to live as those things have not changed even if they jet grind radio
very clearly have,” said Scrape TV Psychology analyst Dr. Sarah Welp. “This kind of obsessive behaviour can lead to mental issues later down the line if it is not treated effectively. Inevitably, these are the kinds of people who will have trouble accepting the death of loved ones. These are the kinds of people who end up storing their parents in closets and doing other funny things.”
Many games have been released for the Dreamcast since its demise, most of them of the homebrew nature. Despite much more advanced machines, that trend has continued with the upcoming release of ‘Rush Rush Rally Racing’ for the system, something which has disturbed Sega officials.
“The Dreamcast was way ahead of its time and it still has things that modern super retard
machines don’t but the simple truth is it has passed into the ether. It’s gone, it’s dead and people need to accept that. You don’t see people continuing to play the Magnavox Odyssey or the Atari 400, at least not in the numbers we see with the Dreamcast,” said Scrape TV Gaming analyst Graeme Hawthorne. “There is little doubt that there is something a little funny with the people still insisting that the Dreamcast is viable. There’s nothing wrong with having a retro night once and a while but once you start to live the fantasy that this thing is still around you are in dangerous territory and really should see someone.”
Sega has set up a special hotline for gamers interested in talking about their Dreamcast issues.

So what does that say about Wii gamers playing retro games on their Wii? or PS3/360 gamers still hooked on Marvel vs Capcom 2? or people into emulation? or gamers playing Playstation games on the Playstation 3/PSP?
Or playing Atari 2600 games on an Atari 2600?

This seems like a rude thing for Sega to say, even if it is at least somewhat factual.
They set up a hot line for this though? I need to call it for the lulz.

I think what the article means to say is that people who "don't" recognize that the DreamCast is dead and get over it show signs of mental disorders. :p
So those who have acknowledged the fact that the console is dead are fine, I think.

There shall come a time when the Dreamcast will rise from the ashes and shall guide us towards the future after of course leading us in defeating the hordes of undeads after that the survivors will be lead to the future and live happily ever after in the Elysian Plains free to play with its divine gamepads.

sounds like propaganda to get people to buy new crap (even if it sucks balls. buy the new products or your a retard). it's that simple.
is anybody else offended by this. newer does not mean better. i have my taste and i stick to it because i think it desn't suck like new generation crap.
they're just trying to get people like me to buy a new system. if you keep playing old games something is wrong with you.
well something is wrong with me... i think for my @#$#@@* self!!!
just to clarify things... it's not that i think the dreamcast has the technical capabilities to hang with newer systems... i'm just saying i like the GAMES of the past.

Simple fact is Dreamcast is the only system you can play MvsC2 on, where a copy won't cost you $100. If Capcom hadn't lost the license, and there was a MvsC3 for some other system, I think Dreamcast would lose most of its current players.
As it is, you can actually get a Dreamcast and a copy of MvsC2, for half the cost of a copy for PS2 or Xbox. It's still the best 2D fighter out there, so I don't know why it's even considered nostalgia.
This whole thing reeks of bull**** to me. Why would Sega actually spend money on a study of Dreamcast players? I think Sega just wants people to stop buying used consoles and games that they no longer make money off of. Next we'll hear Sony telling us that PS2 makes people crazy, and we should all go buy PS3 instead.

I think Sega's end in just good games ended with the Dreamcast. Seriously that system introduced me to emulation and really awesome community at dcemulation. As for games that system had so many cool games that it left me penniless half the time. Now Sega produces mostly crap so I think its ok to have nostalgic memories of when Sega was at its best besides genesis era. Of course I moved off after my Dreamcast died but it was a good 4 years.

Um, you can buy Marvel vs Capcom 2 as a downloadable for the 360/PS3.
~$15.00
and it's BETTER than the Dreamcast version, all 56 characters are playable from the beginning...

Agreed but there is a Playstation to Dreamcast adapter that can be purchased for such uses, although sadly it isn't 100%, for instance it would NOT work with Daytona, but IIRC it worked with every fighting game like Marvel vs Capcom / Marvel vs Capcom 2...
Probably in a year or 2 everyone's going to be playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 on their PC via emulation anyways,,,

the article is suggesting their undieing fixation on a long dead console may at times be a symptom of something more. Wii mamas won't fixate lots of their lives on the awesomeness of the wii once it dies, hording wii momentos and mourning the loss of their long gone console.

I used to be a huge DC advocate, it's a great system after all and it's indeed a shame it died. I read some interesting interview with Berni Stolar and Peter Moore btw, both were closely connected to the launch. Berni's interview must've been emotional to some DC fan, to a certain point. It really shows how mismanagement killed what could've been the most innovative console in history.
Q&A: Former Sega President on Dreamcast's Failure, Pranks Against Sony, His Ouster... (http://bitmob.com/index.php/mobfeed/qaa-former-sega-president-on-dreamcasts-failure-pranks-against-sony-his-ouster.html)
He sheds quite a new light on several aspects that were blamed for the demise of the system:
No EA support: SEGA didn't have a fight really, but actually EA wanted an exclusive deal for sports games on the system. This happened right after they bought Visual Concepts, the team that created the 2k series which were received with more praise than EA's games got in years.
Another nice part:
Bitmob: We once heard a story about you bringing some Sega branding to a Sony-sponsored golf event -- a Sonic mascot as well -- and this being one of the last straws in your relationship with Sega Japan. Is this true?
Read it, it's a nice history class :)
9/9/99 Ten Years After - Peter Moore Blog (http://itsinthegame.ea.com/archive/2009/09/08/9-9-99-ten-years-after.aspx)
Peter Moore's blog, another interesting read.
Over the years, I have been asked many times whether EA's decision not to develop and publish games for the Dreamcast was a major contributing factor in its early demise. That we will never know. But it is hard to argue with EA's rationale at the time and the ultimate outcome - get in position for the impending arrival of the Playstation 2, deploying all resources against the newest version of Sony's already wildly successful video game platform. You can't argue with the results. EA came out of the blocks strongly in support of the PS2, and enjoyed tremendous success throughout the key years of that console's life cycle. If there was one irony to come out of this, it was necessity of investment in a sports label to bolster the Dreamcast lineup.
Bah, something tells me he's holding back some info about his current employer's decisions back then. Nice to see how Stolar sheds a different light on it ;) There was one thing lacking on Dreamcast: A good football game. It's needed in Europe, we don't care about NFL or NHL, just let us play FIFA games.

Dreamcast should have "fighted" with the PS2 till the end to bad it died to early :/ (by fighting i don't mean flame wars and things like that, i mean they should have gone side by side till the passing on the new gen consoles). If all went well maybe we could have seen between the new gen consoles a dreamcast 2, but i can keep dreaming right ? :P. Also its online features could have been "improved" cause the modem was made detachable so they could have launch an lets say Ethernet adapter and an update to the software to support it.

There's a broadband adapter on the market, but they were released late in the console's lifespan and in limited quantities. It's a rare item to be found on Ebay nowadays. I would still love to have one, but paying €100 for one is a bit too much.

I think these all contributed a little bit to the dream casts demise, but i think the big thing was Sega as a brand was taking 2nd or 3rd best place in the majority eyes, and as a console it was going to take second place towards the looming ps2.
Not as many people saw Sega as #1 Brand of choice after Sega Saturn
After ps1 sony was the clear dominant player and people were willing to wait a year for ps2
-not as many people saw Dreamcast as #1 console to pick
-Because ps2 was surely in the eyes of the consumers gonna be at least as great a console as ps1 they were willing to wait
-Ps2 was marketed as so much more powerful, and many believed it
Back then the power of the system was important
Sega positioned the release of their console in a period where everyone was waiting for the ps2 or were still content in waiting because good titles were still being released on their older systems
Consoles from the other manufacturers particularly ps2 were coming and they wanted to wait and see.
I remember at the time thinking that graphics wise dreamcast's power was something half way between the ps1 and the ps2. (even though this isn't true this was also the perception of many of my friends).
Nintendo still had all of their loyalists. N64 had 32+ million in sales, while the Saturn only had 9+ million.
In the previous generation Sega had taken 3rd place behind ps1 and nintendo. Even from the launch Mario64 garnered higher reviews and was prettier then Nights. Nintendo was 64bit (even though that really didn't mean much, in the eye of the consumer it did).
I think in the end too many things were going against Sega and the things you mentioned were just a small contributor.

DCemulation.com was the only place apart from NGEmu that had this same feeling. Too bad it's dead and buried.... DCEmu.co.uk can't hold a candle to the other one.
@ PCXL: Nail, head. No matter what games they released, no matter how popular and superior they were (Tony Hawk 2 on DC owned all), there was no competing against Sony's momentum. The media were eating out of Sony's hand and bought into all the lies of the moment. In retrospect it simply hurts reading reviews that claim the PS2 got an "improved version" of a Dreamcast game while actually it was missing texture details, effects and ran at 30 fps instead of 60. I think that era was a prime example of how hype and media control the business. It's the same now with Apple's products and the Wii. You just can't get around them in the media and even if you would bring a technically superior product on the market, it will still not be as interesting, as it doesn't have the momentum like these two brands.

Yeah some good games like Virtua Fighter series and Dragoon Orta but very few. Like when they made a sequel to Jet Set Radio on Xbox it lost mechanic to spray paint with joysticks which kind of sucked fun of the game. Hell Sonic games now are so horrible most fans like me don't bother.
