i have 2: Corsair Value S. PC5300 DDR2 1GB at 667 MHz
and i plan to buy 2: Corsair PC6400 DDR2 2GB at 800 MHz

will there be any problem with having different types of ram?

I've heard of different types of ram/different sizes not working properly in dual channel before, but I've ran different kinds of ram and never had a problem.

The 800MHz ram will be downclocked to 667MHz or you'll have to overclock the 667MHz ram to 800MHz though.

Is 6GB really necessary though? If not I'd just buy that 4GB ram and use it and keep the extra 2GB as spare, to prevent any issues.

besides i can use some for a ramdisk.

is there any noticeable difference from 667MHz ram to 800MHz?

667 = 5333 MB/s
800 = 6400 MB/s

I'm not sure how noticeable it really is, though.

missmatched sizes will run in dual channel, except the extra ram will run in single (iirc)

i got my ram but now i have a slight problem.
after i installed the ram for some reason i can only use 5.50 of my 6 GB ram

Hmm....weird, 64-bit OSes are good for up to 128GB of RAM IIRC.

Maybe your graphics card takes some of the ram.

Edit: I phail at reading.
I had an XFX 8800GTS before (640mb), and I had all my 4gig of ram available.

i don't think so, as gamefreak said 64 bit OSes can handle much more.

Ya I know. Edited my post, just noticed :p
However there are graphics cards that take whatever ram they need, and leave the rest for the OS to use.
Or, I'm just talking out of my arse again.

Only the really crap ones share memory with the system RAM AFAIK.

does anyone know of a good ramdisk software,

currently using Cenatek ramdiskVE, made for vista, but seems to work fine for win7

for future reference, it was because you had memory hole remapping disabled.

the bios update had it enabled by default.

you want to be careful, despite the fact mismatched pairs of ddr2 ram are supposed to work, there can be finicky boards that won't accept mismatched speeds, sizes and brands.

You should be okay since they are both 2 gb of corsair ram.

-blah never mind, i only read your first post and never read subsiquent posts and didn't realise you already have the ram.

i checked the bios for any ram options before i updated it and i couldn't find any such option, but i had an old bios version, from 2007.

Some boards won't give you an option to flick that because there's no point in disabling it unless you want to lose a couple of hundred megs.

That aside, RAM mismatching may only cause troubles if the internal timing tables of the RAM sticks don't match, otherwise, you'll be fine for the most part. A tolerance of 1 or 2 ticks in the timings is fine. If you can increase RAM voltage, a slight bump (0.02v?) should help.
