Have you seen Google's hard drive study? (http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf) It's pretty interesting. They talk about the correlation of failure rates to hard drive temperatures on page 6.
As for myself, the RAID in my main PC has a fan in front of the cage, only because the drives are maybe 2mm apart from each other. Without the fan, they eventually hit 60+ C and start clicking. My 300 GB VelociRaptor sits at the bottom of the case with no airflow and it's at 35 C right now.
Never seen it but i will look at it a bit more carefully later on, now just jumped to 6, i knew that temps play among the smallest rolls in failures but still when coolers are death cheap why not crab one ? :P and summers can get pretty hot here sometimes... I'm extra careful with my HDD's since i don't like loosing data :P.

The left is the zoomed image in Firefox. The right is the same image opened in Irfanview. Everything, save Firefox and Windows Photo Viewer, shows it as it appears on the right. Photoshop also used to under-saturate things until I did something (something about color profiles, but heck if I remember to be honest...).
Looking it up more, I'm now not even sure if the over-saturated look is truly the correct one like I first thought/read could be possible. I'm finding things stating it could be the other way around too; that is, that wide gamut monitors are inherently always "wrong" across the board except in these applications that are compensating by "under-saturating" them. If you compare my wallpaper to the the two shown there, you see that, by default, it is the more saturated version. Therefore, I assumed that was the correct one. It seems that may not be so?
For what it's worth, I am using the custom color mode on my monitor. I have to; the original UltraSharp U2410 was a flawed product and had dithering in the two RGB modes effectively making them useless, and had Pink tinting issues in the other standard modes. These were fixed in later revisions, but regardless, I just checked the other modes and the discrepancy still exists, so that's all moot.
I believe it's entirely down to being wide gamut. Why doesn't yours have this discrepancy, I don't know. Maybe yours is "wrong" across the board and no color profile correct applications are causing any discrepancy for you, so you simply don't see it. I don't know.
Bah, "right" or "wrong", although knowing which is which would be nice, I just want the damn thing consistent above all! By the way, if this is deviating from the thread too much, you can split it into it's own topic or whatever. The server you have most likely has an onboard hardware RAID controller (probably an Adaptec), but with substantially less cache memory. It may use system RAM instead.I have no idea.

Looks similar to a color management profile issue, for me when i had it what helped in 7/vista was going in control panel=>color management=> calibrate and from then on is mostly next, next... without jumping however over any step, normally they say that you need a certain profile such as sRGB IEC61966 – 2.1 selected, but in my case i had and it didn't helped, however running calibration helped.

By the way, I give up! I just noticed that those two images above look normal in Firefox. Yet, the following appears under-saturated in Firefox.

What is going on!? I could understand if different programs were producing different results, but even the same program is inconsistent? Well, it certainly explains why I had the issue before, did something about it, and now suddenly have it again. It's inconsistent to begin with. Come to think of it, a few of the pictures of the Windows Task Manager I uploaded had their Green colors extremely pale. I figured it was imgur's compression at work, but now I bet it's this.
If I go to calibrate it, this shows up.

Huh? You're saying all drive failures are electrical? You're saying you've never heard of a mechanical part failing? Head crashes, clicking (sometimes caused by a logic board fault but far more commonly a mechanical fault with the head), vibrations/drops/jarring/knocking, heat, or simply wear and tear don't ring any bells? It's not always the logic board.
Part of the way they've been working towards increasing drive density is by making the head fly closer to the platter. You increase the chance of all of those types (mechanical) of failure by doing so (that's assuming all else being equal, as I understand they have worked to counter that with other methods, but it's still a delicate and probably increased (?) thing).
With the increased prevalence of mobile PCs, that likelihood only goes up.
I said the ones that are known to fail. A drive that fails 3 weeks in probably won't have failed from wear in tear, but it's a high possibility that the logic board itself is faulty. That's why you can have a batch of drives with one controller, then another batch, same drive, different controller, one batch giving all kinds of errors while they other is trouble free. Besides platter number, and density, there is very little variance physically between drives, but the boards are different. The board determines speed, behavior, and other attributes that can make a drive succeed or fail. And a cheaply made board can give you a dead drive in no time.
For fun, take a unused drive. Thin the solder on one of the circuits underneath, let it cool, then install the drive. After a few days you will be awarded a grinding noise, or sometimes a clatter.....the controller is missing steps, basically throwing the drive out of whack.
If you have critical data on a dead drive, one way a drive recovery company gets the data off is simply to-install a new propitiatory controller on the drive itself, hence the enormous price for retrieval.
Long term wear is of course an issue though, but again, I have very old drives that still work perfectly. Mechanical failures do happen, but are not the primary cuase of drive failure in the scheme of things.
As for the color, are you running in sRGB?

Source(s)? I can't find much official, but a lot of the offhand stuff I read cites mechanical failure as more prevalent.

Source(s)? I can't find much official, but a lot of the offhand stuff I read cites mechanical failure as more prevalent.
On older drives yes. All hard drives will eventually fail. But the ones that fail early in life tends to point to faulty controllers, not bad parts themselves. Mechanical failure is reported more, like with a head crash. But if you check known bad drives on newegg, most of the users don't say that there was any physical problem...the drive just vanishes from Windows. and for all intents and purposes, appears dead. Which they then RMA it.
When my Seagate died a week after I had it, there was no mechanical failure. The drive was dead. Some further digging turned out the board was bad.
This guy shows how he fixed his dead drive with a new board.
http://www.deadharddrive.com/
Now if a drive head hits the platter, then all your data is toast. But again, in the scheme of things, that rarely happens.
Here is an article against the practice though, as the wrong firmware on the board can physically damage the drive (which I mentioned before)

Okay, but... you're not showing any sources that state that it is almost always the cause of failure as you claimed, and I don't believe it is even the most common (let alone the only) cause. I could be wrong, hence the request for sources of the claim. As for the color, are you running in sRGB?No. As I said, A) I am running in color custom mode as it's all that is usable, and B) it's a moot factor as far as I know, since this happens in all modes. I don't think it's a color setting thing. I think it's a wide gamut and/or color profile issue.
Phil

I have no "official" sources, if that's what you mean. No one has taken a study of wide population of drives, and until that happens, no one can say for sure. The problem is to intermittent. But for new drives that fail you have to wonder.... why has a drive failed, rather than simply it has failed.
I open to otherwise, but when the majority of drives today use the same exact reference design mechanically, same materials, regardless of manufacturer, yet a few months in some die while others don't, that probably points to something besides just a mechanical issue.
Another thing of note is refurbished drives...all they do is slap on a new board, and sell a formally dead drive again.

Sweet, the HP Tech (or presumably some contracted company) will be here to replace the failing hard drive Monday. Pretty sweet response time.
OEM PCs with in-home warranties are awesome. Why did I ever bother building my own PC? F***ing part fails and you wait a month for the damn RMA process. (More annoying is when you have to pay your own shipping, and the shipping is almost the same price as the item itself.)

Why do we build PC's??
Because they're cheaper and more customizable I guess.
Customizable means very little to me - everything I built used plain black cases the most of the time, and as far as upgrading goes - I almost never upgraded the CPU - where having a motherboard that had frequent BIOS updates makes sense, and everything else can be upgraded with a OEM computer. (Unless you have a real low-end PC without PCIe ports)
As far as price goes - I'm comfortable enough with my finances that spending the extra $100 makes sense. Though I can understand people in other situations. And when you're talking about budget lower-end PCs, the price difference is negligible, and in many cases the OEM is even cheaper.

Still running stock for a few reasons.
First, I want to be entirely comfortable with the amount of power it has with everything stock - every once in awhile I still get the "Woah!" sensation when I get surprised at what the car can do... I mean it hits 150MPH no problem if I really push it.
Second, for the most part it is also my daily-driver car, and thus far has been very reliable as far as sports cars go, and I'm not ready to do any modifications that would jeopardize that.
Third, I'm really busy these days with work (I'm almost to the point where I feel I should hire an employee...). Throw in a fairly serious health issue I'm dealing with at the moment, and I'm left with almost no time, or at the very least no time where I have enough energy to do anything more than nothing. If I would start a project I may very well end up having the car sit there in an incomplete state for weeks.

I do have a pickup. My "lovely" 1982 Chevy S10. Paid $100. :p
It's HELL to work on though. It's title may say 1982, but a previous owner apparently took a few junk S10s of varying years and somehow built a functioning vehicle. Problem is, if I have to replace a part it's just trial and error, since I'm not sure what year part I need.
Pretty rough running truck. Screwy clutch, compression is pretty far below spec , burns oil.... Though it's far too old & I paid to little to bother putting any real work into it. I don't even bother to change the oil.
What I do like about it is I can beat the living crap out of it (aka, use it like a truck is meant to be used) and not feel bad. If I bought a brand new truck, I wouldn't want to do that. :p

Don't get too offended at it this time; I'm just lightly making a like points here...New nVidia GeForce Awesome... Now with 12 more pixel shaders, only $1099 more than the old one! -- BoringVehicles are worse ("this car is a few seconds faster than the old/cheaper one for only $109,999 more!"). It's even more pointless when you factor in that extra speed beyond a point we've long passed is more or less pointless with vehicles; less so with technology where more speed almost always translate to more you can use. That is, speeds of cars from decades ago for today's roads are still good for your average user. Speeds of PCs from decades ago, however, in today's PC land are not good enough even for your average user, not even close really.
Of course, that's only factoring speed. I'm not saying cars on the whole have done nothing in that time, but what they have done... well, I'll get that next.Cars on the other hand, have a million different interesting designs (Mazda's Rotary Engine comes to mind), and there is always something new to learn. Not to say there isn't anything new to learn about computers, just nothing that really interests me anymore.Regardless of preference though, wouldn't you agree that the argument of "it's nothing new" less applies to PCs and technology? Granted, I concede that I know next to nothing of mechanics and it's advancements, but technology is a rapidly evolving field, no? In ways, it's still only an emerging field even. I mean, technology is so increasingly becoming involved with vehicles themselves now. Vehicles of the future (not likely the nearer future though) could very well become less and less mechanical and more and more technical for all we know. It's seemingly steering that way (pun not originally intended but what the heck).
To me, the one on the left looks more natural.I'm still not too sure. I think the specific image in question here is simply supposed to look colorful and saturated (and I'm not sure how your monitor is displaying things either, but I know the colors my camera takes are off, so that photo was more to show the variance between them; don't take it as how either of them actually look in person).
If I go with the notion of the less saturated version being "normal", then a lot of my other pictures would seem far too colorless/under-saturated/dull. For what it's worth, I think the more saturated reproductions looks closer to how it did/does on my old CRT, my TN HDTV, and other displays.
That card looks very similar to the Adaptec 29160 I have in a PC at my work. I've only tried connecting one drive to it so I'm not sure if it has any RAID-related options. Yours is probably a slightly different model.I think it's this; if not something rather similar.

I have no clue about RAID or any of that.

http://i.imgur.com/V9siK.png
That's a PNG, and if I view the wallpaper for that in Paint, the Firefox shown version looks no different or less saturated.
I also just dug through some of my old imgur photos to see if I found any other JPEG and PNGs for comparison, and found these.
http://i.imgur.com/WcmAv.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/nwMZY.png
Those two look no different to me as being displayed in Firefox. Strangely, opening the wallpaper from the image of the first in Windows Photo Viewer does show me the under-saturated look (the Blue turns almost more Purple).
So, what have we learned? The inconsistencies have inconsistencies.
Hmm, that prompt doesn't show up for me. I'm guessing the driver/color profile on Windows Update for my monitor clamps the color gamut, just to get people up and running. They might have a wide-gamut one available for download somewhere on their site. Time for me to go investigate...Why!? For the love of things, don't! I'd love nothing more than to be in a position of having everything consistent on this display.
Edit: For what it's worth, my monitor driver/color profile/whatever is the one that came with Windows, so mine didn't "clamp" anything (much as I wish it did...).

Possibly, but what I was trying to state is that there is nothing with computers developing that interests me too much. Not that there isn't anything new. Technology as a whole however, interests me quite a bit still.
I mean, technology is so increasingly becoming involved with vehicles themselves now. Vehicles of the future (not likely the nearer future though) could very well become less and less mechanical and more and more technical for all we know. Cars will always be mechanical in some sense or another, but you are right that computers are making their way deeper and deeper into designs of cars. Actually some modern cars have sensors/computers than can automatically brake/steer for you to avoid an accident, some can even park themselves. That stuff is pretty interesting, and I should mention that what I meant by computers was "personal computers" not computers as they apply to other aspects of different technologies.

I'm almost sure the top PCI slot is out of the question though, and the lower looks mostly clear, but I'm not too sure of those pins/jumpers there.

I also need to check how the PC has the drives hooked up to the board (ala, the cabling, otherwise I have none).
Does that one do hardware RAID? I figured the other card in there was a hardware RAID card. It also said Adaptec on it, if I remember right, though I could be wrong.
Computers from a decade ago are plenty enough for your average user, anyway. How much resources could facebook take, anyway? :pWell, I was talking decades ago. Vehicles from the 1980s or 1990s (earlier even, perhaps) are fine (again, purely referring to speed capabilities here as it's what I was comparing, I realize condition and all introduces other matters preventing it from being practical). PCs from back then today? Forget it. Even from a decade ago, that's too little for most users; not just enthusiast but almost everyone. People want media and such in their lives and from their PCs, to share/view their videos/photos, use music, keep connected, do/control more, etc. A Pentium III w/128MB RAM, a 10GB-20GB hard drive, and Windows 98SE, Windows ME, or Windows 2000 isn't going to handle that in a practical fashion, to say the least (that was the original configuration of my Dell Dimension 4100 from 2001 and was probably around standard for the time, so it's probably a fair baseline for something that's a decade old). Sure, it... works, but it's practically archaic in the modern sense.
Cars will always be mechanical in some sense or another, but you are right that computers are making their way deeper and deeper into designs of cars. For the foreseeable future, yes, I don't expect the foundation of a mechanical motor changing as the norm. I was just highlighting that our rate of advancement, largely thanks to technology, has been increasing exponentially (yet, interestingly enough, yes, there are arguments that the rate of change has slowed for PCs, and there is truth to that, but still). I don't expect the future that Microsoft's recent video of 2019 (or whatever year it was) to quite be the case, but... who knows where things will go?

By the way, looking through my imgur uploads, I'm seeing older ones showing up less saturated that I know, with no doubt, were definitely not showing like that before when I uploaded them/last viewed them. It had to have been when I recently uninstalled and reinstalled my nVidia drivers because it's the only somewhat related change I can think of, and this occurrence only made itself apparent rather recently. That's got to be it.
The question is... does anyone know what I need to change to get the consistency back? I'm pretty sure it's something to do with color profiles/whatever, but it's seemingly already set to how I adjusted it last time I changed it, so... I'm lost. I followed something on Google last time and can't get anywhere with it this time.

Does that one do hardware RAID? I figured the other card in there was a hardware RAID card. It also said Adaptec on it, if I remember right, though I could be wrong.
I can't say for sure, but I'm leaning towards yes. SCSI is a whole different animal compared to IDE/SATA, so it should be pretty robust. As for the other card, it looks like it's a cache battery backup of some sort. It might have some other functionality as well (maybe the cache RAM itself is on that card). I haven't looked at one of those in person so I'm not sure.

Sweet, the HP Tech (or presumably some contracted company) will be here to replace the failing hard drive Monday. Pretty sweet response time.
Depends where you at :P, there is no such thing where i live, here it can take the same amount of time for both, at least with a custom build PC i only needed to ship/part with my HDD, if i had OEM i had to give up my entire PC just cause the freaking HDD broke...

Strangely, opening the wallpaper from the image of the first in Windows Photo Viewer does show me the under-saturated look (the Blue turns almost more Purple).
Have you checked for installed color profiles with your monitor? My monitors had a color profile automatically installed and it made everything look slightly yellow in the Windows Photo Viewer...

Failed HDDs, color inconsistencies, RAID, video cards, clicking TVs, might as well be a support thread.
What kind of TV is it? Is it an LCD? When you turn it on, does it actually turn on but display nothing, or does it not power on at all? Does the OSD come up? If it turns on and the OSD comes up, I believe that means the LCD panel itself is bad. If it won't even turn on, it could be the PSU or a capacitor somewhere. TVs aren't my forte though. As for the other card, it looks like it's a cache battery backup of some sort. It might have some other functionality as well (maybe the cache RAM itself is on that card). I haven't looked at one of those in person so I'm not sure.Actually, starting with the guess you had, I searched Google for images of what looks like mine, and I believe this is it.

It looks like it is a RAID card with it's own cache (if that's what the 128MB RAM it says it has is?) and a battery (no clue what for).
Does this mean I will need to use both of the cards in order to use RAID? I don't think I'm getting both of them to fit.
Also, unlike the picture, both of mine have low profile brackets too. My PC isn't low profile.
Depends where you at :P, there is no such thing where i live, here it can take the same amount of time for both, at least with a custom build PC i only needed to ship/part with my HDD, if i had OEM i had to give up my entire PC just cause the freaking HDD broke...It definitely is hit or miss with OEMs just as it is retail for warranty and service. There's plenty of stories out there about OEM service not getting things done right (like having to do something multiple times, taking a long time, so it goes both ways. Likewise, there's retail companies out there who take care of their customers. Service is just hit or miss, partly by nature, partly on luck. Usually, for no frills and no intervention purposes, OEM probably wins out on the simplicity front though.
Have you checked for installed color profiles with your monitor? My monitors had a color profile automatically installed and it made everything look slightly yellow in the Windows Photo Viewer...I posted a few images a few pages back of my color profile settings, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to color profiles. I believe it still has the changes I made a fair bit back applied though, so... I'm not sure what to change.
I just noticed something too. Photoshop is showing some images under-saturated too, so it's not a program or driver issue. It's something to do with color profiles for working around the wide gamut lameness I guess. I imagine I triggered an reset of things when I reinstalled the drivers, but as I said, it appears my changes are still in place? I'm not sure; color profiles aren't my forte.

A European Woman? You mean someone that actually just came from Europe or just some skinny white chick?
Russian, my mistake. Irina still has her Russian accent, so I think it's obvious that she's not Americanized.
There is indeed an online stereotype of fat American women and skinny European women.
Not just online, it's offline too. Dunno about skinny in Europe, but the fat American stereotype is partially fact. Americans rank #1 in obesity rates (and if you include Samoa, which is an American territory, that STILL makes Americans #1).
Don't you DARE whiteknight.
1. She could probably beat you up.
2. She has probably learned how cold the world is and will spit you out after abusing your trust.
Slip it and nip it.
Hit it and quit it.
Pump it and dump it.
Whiteknight? Nah, I'm not THAT naive, after all the BS women have already put me through in life (which was partially my fault whether I like it or not).
Anyway, if she's not Americanized or should I say "westernized", then I'd say it's worth a try. If she were a typical Ameri-skank, then I wouldn't even bother with trying to "chuck and f@#%" her to begin with since even then it wouldn't be worth it.
Indeed, however some of the "USASUCKSLOL" type people seem to think that "a larger percentage of Americans are obese compared to other countries" = Everyone in America is a bunch of fat f***s. Which isn't really true, though perhaps more true than it should be.
This.
Anyway, I'm only going to say this once. I've been trying to telegraph you all something and I'm surprised that none of you are catching on.

It is a Panasonic Plasma TV. 40". It is very heavy. I have been trying to get it to work all day and it still just "clicks" then shuts off. Since it doesn't turn on, it sounds like the power circuitry part of it (PSU); possibly a bad capacitor somewhere, but I don't know a whole lot about TVs.

Finding parts for TVs can be difficult. You'd be better of taking the TV apart and checking for any bad capacitors (leaking/bulging) and attempting to solder new ones on if that is the case.

Soldering isn't terribly complicated, though a decent soldering job is a bit more tricky. Would be worth a shot anyway - New capacitors wouldn't set you back more than a few bucks so if you can't get it to work at least you could say you tried.
What is the model # for the TV? It might not be impossible to find a replacement power supply for it. Though if you can find a replacement you'd want to due a few basic tests to check if it is indeed the power supply. (Check for proper voltage, check for bulging capacitors, etc..)
It could be something other than a power supply (inverter, backlight, etc) since I'm sure the TV features some circuitry to shut it off in the event of a possibly dangerous failure.

If it's out of warranty, it is merely out of free repair from the manufacturer. Service is still an option.
Whether it is worth it is another matter. You'd have to weigh the cost of a new set against the cost of the service (some may even charge just to open it/look at it too; least that wasn't uncommon in the CRT days but that may be due to the risks and work involved with those).
Even if the cost if cheaper, you'd have to weigh if it's worth that cost compared to a new set which may be better (may be being the key part). This might not be as much of an issue if the set in question now was/is a relatively nicer set, or if the cost of service/repair isn't to expensive.

Those drives have 80-pin SCA connectors. They're designed to plug into a backplane, like the one you saw. The one connector provides both power and the SCSI interface over one connector, and usually supports hot plugging. The cable going from the backplane is a standard 68-pin connector.
Your best bet for finding a multi-connector cable is probably on eBay. Old-style SCSI (as in the parallel interface and not SAS) is all but dead. New cables are probably in very low-volume production, if at all.
Can someone tell me if an SSD needs any cooling or if its in the same boat as HDD's when it comes to cooling ?
No cooling required for an SSD, except maybe if you use one of those OCZ Z-Drives with the onboard RAID controller. Conventional SATA SSDs barely produce any heat.

But.... For the sake of troubleshooting, you can determine if there is damage on the PSU if the TV cannot go to standby mode (if there is no red light dot in the TV when it is plugged). If that's the case, you can send it for repairs.

Yep, that's about all you can do to get an SCA drive to work on a normal 68-pin connector. As for the terminators, those are needed to prevent the signal from reflecting back once it reaches the end of the cable and causing issues. It'll usually work without one (with a single drive, at least), but with degraded performance, and the controller will probably complain during POST. Some drives have built-in termination that is enabled/disabled through a jumper. In that case, it would only be enabled on the drive at the end of the cable.
SCSI, in one form or another, has been around since the early 80s, so it's a bit different than more modern interfaces.

That is indeed the case with TV repair. And most TV repair is vastly overpriced. When I used to do it, we weighed the age....if the TV was 3 years old, rplace it. Then we weighed the cost next. 60% of the time the customer would have to buy a new set.

A plasma has no tube, it creates colors and therefore a picture by exiting ions, though surprisingly, the basic premise is similar. And TV's that last 10 years are a distant memory. The interpreter chips on most sets today will fail long before then...some worse than others. CRT's were built like tanks. LCD's aren't.
If you look inside an old TV, you see lots of different daughter boards. Look inside a new TV, and there is maybe 3 boards, tops, besides the power supply. And that comes from fitting the components tighter and tighter on the PCB...and when components are that close, they are more susceptible to heat. There is a myth that LED TV's will last forever because they produce little heat. False on all accounts. Sice some new TV's run Intel processors, the problem is even worse. Place your hand on an LED screen. It cool. Now place it on the back....and you will see where all the heat is going. The thinner the TV the less heat it dissipates.
Just checked with a TV repair company, the cost to repair my TV will be $480 plus parts.

I have fixed a 42" 2005 Panasonic Plasma before.
That click has nothing to do with the power supply. There was a recall on the 37" models (TH-PDx and THPX) for the power supplies, but that's hardly the issue here.
That click means you have a blown DG (Digital Graphics board.). They go for anywhere from $299 used to $680 new.
Those Early ED TV's from Panasonic had bad voltage regulation problems.
But there is an easy way to fix it though.
Turn your TV on, and wait for the click. Look at the standby light. It should be blinking. Let me know the number of blinks after the pause.

Yeah, the first thing you have to do is remove the back cover. Don't worry about the screws near the middle (where the inputs are) you'll get to those later. Brand?
Seems to be a Philips 50PF7320 (it's their support guy who told me to leave it unplugged for a while the first time this problem occurred)
It's really dumb if it can't be fixed because the TV wasn't even turned on at the time of the power outage... Well, it was on, but stand-by...

Power still flows into most electronics even on standby.....standby itself means the main power is just shut off from one of the motherboards, the capacitors are still juiced.
I have had no experience with the Phillips brand (wierd heh) but I can look into it later.

All it involves is slightly modifying the DG board. You will need a soldering iron, grab one at Radioshack, make sure you get a thin tip. Get the cheapest one you can find, it's overkill for what you will need it for anyway.

Huh, some of these FAH work units have some weird point distribution.
SMP client (bigadv): 4.2% (24) of total WUs, 40.6% of total points.
GPU0 (275GTX): 86.4% (488) of total WUs, 27.4% of total points.
GPU1 (560 Ti): 9.4% (53) of total WUs, 32% of total points.
I should also get some more Project 6604 for my 275 GTX (runs all the time), it boosted it's PPD by 2kish.
n_w95482
November 16th, 2011, 03:11
The beta cores reward more PPD since they have much more stringent requirements (amount of CPU cores for bigadv, time to complete, etc) than the standard ones. Also, the faster you return WUs, the bigger of a bonus you get.

Optima deep cycle batteries or nothing for me. :p
Other than that, any cheap battery with the right terminals and the right amperage is fine... they all get roughly 3-5 years. (More if you wanna push your luck.. I've seen cars with 9 - 10 year old batteries.)
Test your alternator before you even bother replacing the battery. You can either go to a car parts store and they'll test it for free (in the US anyway) or you can test it with a multimeter. Red lead to positive battery terminal, black lead to negative terminal. With the car running, it should read around 14.4V (+/- .3V). Turn all the electric things your car has on (radio, windshield wipers, AC, Rear Defogger, etc). Check the voltage - with the added load it may be lower than 14.4, but it shouldn't be any lower than 13.5 or so.

Intel boards overclock via multiplier and leave memory untouched.
If you buy 16gb of stock 1600 ddr3 at 9-9-9 24, it will function to the exact same performance and reliability of corsair ricer xtreme if you keep stock clocks for a fraction of the cost
since overclocking your ram at best yields a negligible performance increase then it's a bit retarded to pay so much for the same result
like buying monster hdmi cables when the signal is defined and exact, ram is also defined and exact

A more important question, can chips without an unlocked multiplier be overclocked to any decent level with non multiplier changes?
(protip, the answer is no)The only viable non k chip would be the i5 2400, this can go to a 38 multi.
The base clock at most can go 2-3 mhz higher than stock.
So, the multiplier can go to 3.8ghz but the boost from memory/base clock increases would be 1-200mhz at most if you get a godly chip
you speak like memory is important to overclocking when intel chips lock up when the base clock is altered.
Good memory with intel for overclocking is like john holmes with impotence, if you need memory at 2x the price because you spent the extra money that could have been the difference between a 2500k and 2400, you deserve the performance raping

I didn't realize that DDR3 was the best available(got confused with gpus). Still, the majority of users have absolutely no need for anything above 4 gigs. You can buy a crap load of ram now, never use it..........and then a higher speed(ddr4) will come out and you'll realize it was pointless.

Still, the majority of users have absolutely no need for anything above 4 gigs. You can buy a crap load of ram now, never use it..........and then a higher speed(ddr4) will come out and you'll realize it was pointless.Even less users need RAM with faster speeds. It's not all about the type or the one with the faster MHz.
I bought 8GB of DDR2, and it was 800MHz 5-5-5-12 1.9V stuff, certainly nothing too special in it's class. DDR3 came out. My regret was nowhere to be found.
For one, it brought no advantages for my platform/CPU.
For two, it was still expensive at the time.
Lastly, the lower grade stuff back then wasn't much faster. The lower speeds of DDR3 are no faster than DDR2 (the extra timings DDR3 has negate the frequency advantages a bit). It's not until you get up to the very high speed grades that DDR2 can't compete, and that is simply because DDR2 can't clock any higher then (this is one reason DDR3 even came about, but again, unless you have very high speed grades, the timings hold it back to DDR2 levels anyway).
http://xtreview.com/images/DDR3-1600%20SDRAM/everest-1.png
There's even been results showing chipsets can make sizable differences, so who's to say the RAM is as much faster as we think?
With RAM as cheap as it is, I'd forget not needing it. This obviously applies to a point (ala, I'm not going to go and get 64GB RAM or whatever), but I've been dealing with PCs more than just a few years to know that down the line, the RAM amount is always one of the, if not the, major make or break factors on keeping a system going that much longer/better.
Personally, 4GB has long been below my radar. If you put 16GB of 1600MHz 9-9-9 or 8-8-8 or whatever DDR3 in front of me (and that's about the standard) versus 8GB of the fastest stuff (that 2000MHz+ stuff), I'm taking the 16GB every single time. Even if I don't absolutely need it, the speed difference will never become a real limitation. There's a bigger chance the quantity will, even if it itself isn't a pressing concern.
I've never worried too much about frequency or timings. I get whatever seems to be a good balance of those and price, with quantity taking the precedent. That rule has never led me wrong.

Quantity beats speed any day when it comes to ram. Doubling your ram amount will make a much bigger impression on overall snappiness rather than doubling the speed.

In that case, no, it still doesn't stand. Who says you know our uses and our preferences? I've passed 4GB more times than I count (and no, it wasn't intentionally doing so for the sake of it).
More RAM allows a greater flexibility of multi-tasking, and something that's oft ignored, more longevity. Consequently, RAM is relatively more expensive once it's time has passed, so upgrading it would be too. Besides, I remember the days of the opposite end of the spectrum, where you always wanted more RAM, so with it being this cheap, I'll jump all over it.
Also, it's not their latest article on the subject.

Thought so... well that's not an intel only thing... AMD processors can be OC'ed via multiplier to (all their CPU's marked black edition have unlocked multipliers), for those however that don't have it you can also OC via FSB (well the correct term is Hyper Transport with amd) which raises both RAM and CPU clock speed (which i used on mine and got a 600Mhz boost, usually that's the approximate boost you can get through HT OC with an AMD ).

Now if only everything didn't feel so darn wet and sticky INSIDE the house as well...(stupid coastal tropical climate)...

If you can't come to the conclusion that most users don't need more than 4 gigs of ram yourself, then I don't know what to say.Requesting support/proof of a claim of "I am a heavy RAM user and never use 6GB so none of you need over 4GB" does not equal me thinking "most average users don't need over 4GB". You are attempting to apply my request for support of a claim to something else you said when you later backpedaled.
What I was indirectly getting at by asking for support to such a claim was "don't make sweeping generalizations about everyone else based on your own use".
I'm getting to learn a lot about computers these days.

I just got to thinking about the episode when I was jumped outside a bar almost 5 years ago.
I was with my girlfriend (18 at the time, and a couple who were her friends, both 19), we went into a bar. The three of them got carded, I slipped in after them (I'm guessing they thought I looked older than them, heh, or they couldn't be arsed:p).
I was able to buy beer there too, without getting carded, alone. I felt a little proud at that moment.
Anyway, the day after, I went to the police station to give a proper statement, but the police officer didn't say anything about it.
And of course the police knew how old I was.
I didn't hear anything about it in the trial either, nor have I heard anything since then, but the bar did let a 17 year old boy get into the bar, as well as buy beer, without getting carded. And I looked like a kid at the time.
I wonder if they got fined for it.

No it was because IE5 was randomly decide the internet had ceased exisiting. IE6 would crash all the time and both had no tabs. IE7 crashed every other minute but at least unlike IE6 you could recover it. IE8 crashed 60% less than IE7 but still a fair lot. IE9 is a hell of a lot better but by now anyone in the know has had too much crap from past IE versions.

I personally use IE regarless of what people think about it. is my personal decision and am very happy with IE9 so far. sure is Firefox or Chrome better in one way or another but i personally use "Favorites" quite a lot and in this area Firefox and Chrome are just annoying to me. not saying IE is better but it does the job for me so am happy. also i would like to mention some performance problems when running Silverlight apps under Firefox sometimes.
-Ashe-
November 23rd, 2011, 14:04
Hm you must be one of the rare persons who happen to actually use Silverlight apps :)
But yeah, IE9 is ok, it still lacks a lot of CSS improvements but at least it's small and stable... Personally I mostly use IE through integrating IWebBrowser2 though...
Also, I understand supporting old versions of IE can be annoying from a development point of view, but I tend to think the web developers are the problem and not the browser(s), it's not that hard to create something that works everywhere.

The snow is now officially over a month late here.
It's strange and unusual for the snow even to not have laid a thick layer on the ground even a week or so into October, and now we're closing in on December.
Even though it's raining quite a bit, the temperature is preventing it from snowing. It's hovering a few degrees (2-4) above freezing, though it does usually dip a few degrees below, at night.
I don't like snow.

Sounds a bit like how things are here (yet we don't consistently have temperatures close to freezing except maybe on a few occasions; least it's been rather warm for this time of year).
We haven't had any real snow either. There may have been a few cases where it came down, and once where it stuck just a little (not even enough to layer things or stay more than a few hours), but that's it.
We're had quite a bit of rain, but that's nothing new. I think we already had like record rainfall this year as of a month or so back or something.

Thankfully most of the roads around here are gravelled, not salted.
Funny that, in the southern end of the country, they almost everywhere use salt on the roads, yet it turns out horrible.
Up north, on the other hand, where it tends to snow the most, barely any salt is used, mostly gravel, and the only problems we have are foreign truck drivers who can't use chains.

Anyone who would sit in line for seven hours to save $70 on a TV is a major tool.

I beat Panzer Dragoon today! I think the only reason I beat it (on hard btw) is because I promised my awesome nephew that I was going to beat it... and I NEVER break my promise to my awesome nephew! I'm telling you guys (well DS knows what I'm talking about), Panzer Dragoon is one of the most awesome games SEGA ever put out. The old fashioned quadratic rendering and sound track running at 20 fps really adds to the gaming experience, seriously.
Now I'll probably go on Gametap and get Panzer Dragoon II Zwei and play that next. I have Orta, but I want to beat that last.
