My local kmart hires special needs kids and pays them $3 an hour. Minimum wage is supposed to be $7.30 here. They get away with this because they claim that these kids need special care at work which costs $4.30 an hour.

This, for some reason, pisses me off to a great extent. Taking advantage of special needs kids? Pfft.

Some places are beyond hopeless. Next thing you know, some workplaces will actually demand to be paid by employees for granting them the 'honor' to work for them.

Isn't it actually illegal, and can be challenged in court for current and retroactive compensations (not to mention the discriminative policy)?

Is it discriminatory? Should a company pay the total wage when the total work can't be done? If they hired based on qualifications, they'd never hire a special needs person unless the job was so base and simple.

But on that note, since hiring these types of people is usually a "We're a good company! Love us!" type of action, you'd expect them to at least pay minimum wage.

My wife's birthday today (she's 27). Her parents are here (we live in a different city, BTW), along with my aunt and a few of her friends.

It is simple. They unload trucks and unpack boxes. Doesn't need $4.30 an hour worth of supervision. They're not even stocking shelves or anything which could require a few brain cells I guess to understand the sequence numbers.

I could understand it if they were temporarily paid less due to the extra instruction needed to explain things, and once they learned what they needed to learn, pay them minimum wage at least. But no, this is a permanent thing.

Mind you, these are just really slow kids - not at the retarded level, where they are unable to put their own pants on. They are able to learn things and do things without supervision, provided they are given a tad extra extra explanation.

Sometimes I'm kinda glad I live in Norway.
When I started working at the supermarket, I got 120 NOK (roughly 19USD at todays rate) an hour... And back then I used to work 22 out of 28 days in a 4 week period, 8 hours a day. Needless to say, the cash that flowed in made me a happy panda.

For guides I'd suggest:
Game Guides, Walkthroughs, Solutions, Maps, Codes and game FAQs for PC and Video Games (http://guides.gamepressure.com/)

They don't have quite as many guides as GameFAQs does, but the ones that are present are much better. Unlike walls of text on GameFAQ, these guides are sprinkled with 2 screenshots after every 1 sentence you just can't go wrong with the troublesome bits.

He's simply not cool with it.

Have you ever said something that's 'weird' and someone bursts out laughing?
For example, "I design shoes for diabetic cats"

People don't have an auto response and the comment is absurd so they gravitate towards laughter.

What I'm saying is, your friend feels outside his own reality with his girlfriend. She must be hot or he must be weak but for some reason guys become weird and clingy, show off-y and start acting irrational when things 'shouldn't' be the way they are

Reminds me of something I read (http://dilbertblog.typepad.com/the_dilbert_blog/2007/07/writing-funny.html) in Scott Adams' (of Dilbert fame) blog:

Humor is about creating logic that a-a-a-lmost makes sense but doesn’t. No one in the real world could put gum on his penis and retrieve an iPod from a storm drain. But your brain allows you to imagine that working, while simultaneously knowing it can’t. That incongruity launches the laugh reflex.

So my ISP upgraded its tariffs free of extra charge:

2mbps --> 4mbps
4mbps --> 6mbps
+ new 8mbps package announced (pretty expensive though, $90 a month).

Why am I not celebrating?

1mbps --> 1mbps

Never felt this discriminated in a while now, hey m0f0s we're paying customers too we don't beg for your f***ing internet or get it as charity!:angry:

I'm hoping this is just a clever financial strategy, atm the 1mbps plan is the least economical per unit speed. I guess what they're hoping for is that many people will jump ship from the 1mbps plan and pay a bit extra for 4mbps (and it's working too, lots of people on a local forum are upgrading). Not me! I'm waiting till they finally upgrade this s**t as well.

BTW what's the bandwidth limit for a standard copper telephone cable? Wouldn't 8mbps be coming a bit too close?

I keep on hoping against hope my ISP will do the same thing...though they've attacked the other ISPs that now offer more freedom saying their service is garbage and worse than their own...which is true whenever SeaCom (undersea cable) goes down but wrong the rest of the time which is 95% of the time...

Can't wait till our contract expires...I want...no I need more bandwidth...these days my dad works from home and it's greatly affecting how much of the cap I can play with each month...in other words it's partly responsible for my lack of activity around here.

eBay user selling NES bundle for $35,000, says he's down on his luck
July 15, 2010 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Nintendo in general

http://gonintendo.com/wp-content/photos/thumb_500x_35knes.jpg

What makes this NES bundle worth $35,000? Absolutely nothing, that's what. The thing is, the seller needs to pay off some bills, and they are hoping that someone will actually come through and help them out with the funds.

BEST ORIGINAL NES BUNDLE PACKAGE ON EBAY
I am down on my luck need to pay bills living pay check to pay check. this is my price possession the only thing I can say I own 100%. to some a nes system could mean nothing but to me its priceless. I hate to part with it but i need the money. You might say what a ridiculous price but thats how hard it is for me to part with it. I have 100% feedback. whoever buys it can verify that I really need the money. I can show you my bills and credit report to verify it and I will give proof that the bills got paid. I would like to personally hand over the nes bundle system over to the winner and personally thank him/her if possible. God bless.

Feeling really, really generous? Check out the auction here (http://cgi.ebay.com/original-Nintendo-Entertainment-System-package-BUNDLE-/140387605886?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Video_Games&hash=item20afc0dd7e#ht_2379wt_1137)

Well thank god all these plans have no cap. I just want moar speed, back when I got this connection I was ecstatic, "WOA! 100KBps man! That's more then I'll EVER need!!" But with time the ecstasy wore off and these days I'm like "Come on man! This speed is s**t! 26GB episode pack is taking way too long!" :D

well actually, thats on a 8bits per byte formula, which isn't true as theres a 1 or 2 byte overhead depending on the encapsulation format, (PPPoE's 10 vs PPPoA's 9)

the best achievable transmission speed will be around the 111.111111111111MB/s

Germans really like their boardgames (http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/2010/07/the_social_scie.html):

"There are two schools of thought as to why the Germans love board games," says Martin Wallace of Warfrog. "The Germans are of the opinion that it's down to their superior education system. We English are of the opinion that it's because German TV is sh***."

There are, in fact, many more than two schools of thought about why Germany is the world's board game superpower. It could be the enthusiasm of the citizens. In a country such as Britain, it is downright odd to pull a board game out of a cupboard and offer to teach it to friends alongside after-dinner coffee. In Germany, people do that and more. They *discuss old games and act as evangelists for new ones. Naturally, the games are better as a result.

Any Germans around to offer their thoughts?

Um, I rather like boardgames and the germans easily come up with the best. Ravensburger AG makes some legendary stuff, perhaps if the rest of the world had more immediate access to their board games and puzzles the entire world would be more into board games and puzzles.

Take Labyrinth/Crazy Labyrinth for instance, it's one of the best board games in existence, if more people knew about it more people would be into board games.

The rest of the world only has Monopoly, Rummikub, Risk, Trivial Pursuit, Cluedo (which requires a bunch of players to be any good) and stuff Mattel makes. And many of those games can take hours to play so with Risk or Monopoly for instance it's often a case of oops we only have 2 hours, looks like we can't start this time around.

I guess it could be related to the education system though. I went to a German school and in Grades 1 and 2 the kids still get breaks (aside from lunch breaks) from work and during those breaks all sorts of board games and card games come out for the kids to amuse themselves with. Even in Grade 5 during Geography if we performed really well on a test or earned a reward in some other way out came Map Mania (admittedly not from Ravensburger or any german company) and the class formed into teams and we spent a lesson playing that. This behaviour just carries over to normal life I guess then and sticks around all the way through a person's life.

hmm what does that mean? cause i switched from the 100mbs to my comcast at home at 20mbs and still had the 1.5mb/s maximum.

Internet speed has less to do with plan and more to do with line stats.

20mb at 1.5mb real download is as fast as it gets without fibre.

Line attenuation, signal to noise ratio, frequency band spectrum results.
These three things determine your internet speed.

Line attenuation is worse the further you are from the exchange.
SnR is just a setting set by your ISP, I had mine changed on request.

there are 4 snr profiles. 15 (worst), 12, 9 and 6. As they get lower, crc errors increase so you need a good line.

Another factor is interleaving settings, this affects your ping mostly but download too. No interleaving is called fastpath and THE setting you want for games.

Higher interleaving increases ping but essentially is a staggered data stream to correct errors. Higher = more correction.

Then let's move on and talk about better stuff. Economist Tyler Cowen on the recession and Zero marginal product workers (http://www.marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2010/07/zero-marginal-product-workers.html).

It is true that the ceteris are not paribus, But the observed changes if anything favor the hypothesis of zero marginal product. There has been no major technological breakthrough in the meantime. If anything, there has been bad monetary policy and a dose of regulatory uncertainty. And yet again we can produce just as much without those workers. Think of "labor hoarding" yet without...the hoarding.

You might cite oligopoly models and argue that the workers can produce something, but firms won't hire them because they don't want to expand output, due to lack of demand. That doesn't seem to explain that output has recovered and that profits are high. And since there is plenty of corporate cash, it is hard to claim that liquidity constraints are preventing the reemployment of those workers.

In general, which hypotheses predict lots more short-term unemployment among the less educated, but among the long-term unemployed, a disproportionately high degree of older, more educated people? This stylized fact seems to point toward search and recalculation ideas, with some zero marginal products tossed in. Do aggregate demand theories yield that same data-matching prediction? I don't see it, at least not without being paired with a theory of concomitant real shocks.

The "dregs" and the "complementarities" views also have different policy recommendations. The dregs view implies either hopelessness or a lot of fundamental retraining or ongoing assistance, while the complementarity view leads one to ask how we might mobilize positive complementarities, rather than orphaned factors of production, more quickly. Perhaps there are some fixed factors, such as managerial oversight, and entrepreneurs do not want to strain those fixed factors too hard. How can we make such fixed factors more replicable or more flexible?

However theoretical this may sound, the answer to this question has real implications for economic policy.

Um, I rather like boardgames and the germans easily come up with the best. Ravensburger AG makes some legendary stuff, perhaps if the rest of the world had more immediate access to their board games and puzzles the entire world would be more into board games and puzzles.

So it is a matter of quality, even if only partly.

Never heard of it, but I'm not very knowledgeable about board games, anyway. Is it available outside of Germany, in english?

BTW, the board games in general do not appeal to me because they're too social. I fit the "lonely gamer" stereotype pretty closely (to the point of avoiding even online gaming).

And they're probably not very good games to begin with. One of my coworkers is a big board game fan, and some of his games take days to finish. Once again quality seems to be an issue.

Yeah I guess it's a combination of quality combined with simplicity yet still ample chance for strategy and then early introduction of the games where it becomes totally normal behaviour to play a boardgame with friends even later on in life and then to continue the love for boardgames with your kids.

Hmm, seems it's not called Crazy Labyrinth as a direct translation would suggest but instead aMAZEing Labyrinth.

Another of my favourites is one called Deutschlandreise
Deutschlandreise | Board Game | BoardGameGeek (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/6787/deutschlandreise)

And then there's the german classic "Mensch ärgere dich nicht" which translates directly to "Person/Human don't get angry"
Mensch ärgere dich nicht - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mensch_ärgere_dich_nicht)

Pretty much all of the games I mentioned above have rules that can be explained in 2 minutes but they can entertain for ages as you play em over and over and over etc.

Cafe International is slightly more complex and not by Ravensburger (still German though) but also pretty fun.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/214/cafe-international

And then my final favourite would be a game that's not German and a fair bit more complex and it can sometimes really get the brain smoking as you try to work out whether you can win in that turn or not.
Rummikub - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rummikub)

And all of this is only the tip of the Iceberg, there's way more out there.

Another I enjoyed back when was 8 or so has no memorable name. It was a dice game combined with a puzzle. There were 6 puzzle turtles each made up of 6 numbered pieces and the goal was to assemble your turtles first which you did by rolling a dice and then picking the piece that matched the number rolled and placing it in the turtle (you were essentially assembling it's shell).

Even Lotto/Memory exists as a mathematical variant for kids starting off school to enjoy.

Top Trumps is also very popular among german kids mainly cuz of it's portability so for instance it's great to play during breaks at school or during the bus ride.

Well they weren't really tips XD, seeing as I'm just 22 most of these are either childish or at best teen games or parent and child games and they were mainly examples of stuff a typical german kid might come across. And I'm afraid that's were most of my experience is since these days all my german friends have moved away and I just have english friends left who don't understand the concept of having fun from playing a board game plus I do far more reading these days and spend a lot of time on my computer so board game time is virtually nill other than an almost seasonal game or two of Rummikub with my sister.

Rummikub however is an all ages type thing in my opinion so that you could definitely look up. The card game Rummy is also a short and sweet affair people of all ages can enjoy. In fact if it's just two aged players then card games are your best bet as opposed to board games unless of course you're into Chess or Backgammon.

Lol, I was that kind of introverted person up until my early college years. Always trying to keep everything inside, but getting uncontrollably angry some of the times. And yes, taking some steps back, trying to see the matters a bit clearly by getting away for a while from the source of irritation helps a lot. Though from my experience, if things don't get taken care of by me, it tends to get worse and worse. I fell into a depression some times ago partly because of that.

Get a Worms game and create a custom team and then name one of the worms on that team the same as the person...then play VS that team and have fun killing the worm over and over again in funniest of ways.

Lol, great catharsis. I prefer playing Dynomite though. With some Guilty Gear soundtrack, with maximum volume.

Take his girl or the girl he loves, spark up some day 2 action and not have sex with her.

He will have to hear her whine about how she's never been rejected like that before and give the usual chode routine of trying to be sympathetic and white knight into her pants all the while in the knowledge she's my reject.

Sloppy seconds is nowhere near as bad as having to be a second best.

oO Uh, that's some hardcore stuff. I don't know...

Thanks guys :)

If your looking for something more gory you could always grab oblivion, deadly reflexes, a torture mod & the construction set, make a char that looks like him with a big HP and torture/amputate him to your likings, though personally i just don't give a f... and ignore pricks, or if they stand in my way i find a smart way to "remove my problem" or get him in trouble, rarely though resorting to physical violence unless his the one starting it.

I used to express my angry feelings more clearly before. It never worked to my benefit. Keeping them inside and staying away defuses them and makes everything better.

Anyway, I'm assuming the problem is rather trivial (as most of our human problems are). If its nature is more serious, than staying away is not always an option.

Yes, most of the problems are trivial. It's just me being overwhelmed by negative feelings makes me perceive them to be somewhat a lot bigger. Keeping composure is the key, maybe. The tricky part is how to express my feelings and thoughts without it being too offensive to the other party.

The first was quite intriguing, and its not just about gore (although there's plenty of that). I liked it a lot.

The second is not as good, but has its moments. Still recommended (unless you're squeamish, of course).

3rd, 4th and 5th steadily decline in quality and focus mostly on the gore.

Saw VI is actually quite good (still below the 1st movie, but not far). If you liked the first and second, you'll probably like this one.

That's good for you, or else you'd be killed for being too squeamish:

Who was this Allen who sought to kill Charles as too "squeamish", and why had his destined victim said in the postscript to that frantic letter that he must be so completely obliterated in acid?

- H.P.Lovecraft, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward"

Myself, I like both mindless killing and brainless action movies (not to mention silly comedies, such as Austin Powers). My utility function is very broad in this respect. Although said movies do have to meet several criteria for me to enjoy them. I don't like all gory movies (as you can see from my variable ratings for the Saw movies).

I've been reading several essays by George Orwell, having just finished the amusing Bookshop Memories (http://www.online-literature.com/orwell/892/).

Now compare this essay (published in 1936) to a blog post from 2009, called The Seven Types of Customer (http://www.rocketbomber.com/2009/06/01/rethinking-the-box-the-seven-types-of-customer) (written by a bookstore manager).

Its amazing how much similarity of experience is there. The times may be a-changing, but people are not - that's for sure.

Just two examples:

Orwell: "Unfortunately she doesn't remember the title or the author's name or what the book was about, but she does remember that it had a red cover."
Matt: "Yeah, I get it, the cover of the book is red. Can you recall even one word in the title? Or the author’s first name? Or if it’s fiction or non-fiction? Color, while vivid in your own memory, is in fact the least helpful detail you can give us about any book."
***
Orwell: "In a town like London there are always plenty of not quite certifiable lunatics walking the streets, and they tend to gravitate towards bookshops, because a bookshop is one of the few places where you can hang about for a long time without spending any money."
Matt: "Grazers don’t need a book, or want a book, but they love coming in to the bookstore, and love lingering leisurely over all the tables, racks, endcaps, promotional displays, and front-of-store placements."

EDIT: Another RT: The Who still rocks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb5JSKr2m6Q)!

Most of the time, a kebab is about as far away from kosher as you can get. Unless the only thing on it is the meat, and it's all beef ... then it'd be okay. But that's more beef-on-a-stick than true kebab, isn't it?

Oh? That's interesting. I never knew that, I'm sorry. But what is the ingredient in the common kebab or at least the ones you have stumbled into that is not kosher? I thought mostly the ingredients (the ones I have ever eaten) are bread (the flat one, I don't know what the name is), meat, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, chili paste and tomato paste.

The problem, as with most kosher problems, isn't so much WHAT it is, but more how it's put together. If I'm not mistaken, the ingredients of a kebab are assembled before it's cooked. Kosher rules dictate that raw meat cannot touch any other food before being prepared. If the meat were cooked first, and then combined with the others, it would be okay.
