View Full Version : Something people might want to consider!

I have been using epsxe for quite some time now, and it has come to my attention that people often have problems with the savestates. I know from personal experience for example that i have had to restart 3 RPG's because of this. What I was going to advise was that people should keep both a savestate which they use whenever, and a regular save for backup. These other saves are much smaller so it is easier to send to people for help, and also in case that an error does occur, you have at least some basis to work from when trying to solve the problem.

Id has gotten it right. We all shouldn't be putting all out effort to the SaveState mechanism. Not that I'm saying the author of ePSXe isn't doing a good job but a backup should be available just in case things happen.

damn you got that far on save-states? wow...I learned my leson not to rely save states from back at version 1.2.0.
Savestates tend to have problems with at change-disc times I've discovered. They best time to use a save state is when you are playing a single disc game, or you just want to reply a favorite scene without the hassle of fighting a boss or monster.
otherwise don't rely on them, since they aren't a replacement for a good o'l memory card save.

Why wouldn't you use the memory card? The original Playstation didn't have save states. I use save states for backup.

savestates are useful because if epsxe or your computer crashes for any reason (like a power loss or other), then your saved games don't work. I've lost about 3 hours of play in ff9 because of this and 3 hours in CC.
So save states are useful still. If only I had used them.

I've lost so much time to the buggy memory cards of ePSXe 1.2.0 that I really haven't trusted them since. Savestates have always worked for me.

I try not to use save states at all. I used them several times in FFT (third chapter) and I ended up losing all my data. From then on I swore I'd never use them again.

Thing is (as I posted a while back), I'm having awful problems doing regular saves in Xenogears. I try to save, and it always, without fail, gives me an error. I've tried hitting F4, and I've tried hitting F5...nothing. I was told that this could be because I started the game with a quick save-staTe (so I wouldn't have to watch the intro again should it crash), and that save-states conflict with real saves.
Id, the save-state I just sent you (well, one of 'em) is saved right at a "save-point"...I'd be very interested if you could somehow get the game to regular-save.

.....AMEN.....
I got the exact same thing in FF8 and had to go back all the way to the beginning of disk 3 (Using normal save from the last one of disk 2) From then on I swore not to touch that savestate thingy EVER again ..
I heard it works just fine with some certain games. Well, not the FF series I guess.

I use savestates quite a lot( not forgetting to use the memcard save when available) specially before bosses or during a boss fight. But the most annoying thing happens not with the savestate, but with the memcard save. Imagine this, you are playing a game for 3 or 4 hours only saving on the memcard, you don't have to go out to the gui to see anything (or you had to use the -nogui switch to get the game working or used it 'cause you like to start the game right away) and then, when you least expect, there's a bug on the emu or a power loss or whatever and your computer/emu crashes. Then you discover the emu only saves the memcard data to disk when you go out to the gui and you lost all the progress you made so far, what would you say at a time like this?

I never said that savestates are bad to use. In case people think I said this. I just don't use them myself for several reasons. Being able to save only at certain points can give the game more challenge since this is when the authors of the game want U to save. Another reason is that Savestates have given me various problems before.
People should keep using them if they have problems with regular saves or power loss however. I know how annoying it can be to replay 4 hours of a game since here in Malaysia the power fails quite often.
Responding to LuciferSam:
I am in school right now and therefore can not run the emulator. Once I get home I will try to download the savestate and then save it on to a memory card. I know exactly what you are talking about with the regular Xengears save. They do not want to save very often. Luckily I have been able to lately so I should be able to send you your save soon enough.
That is all

Whenever there's a bug on the emu I find I can usually ESC out. I have not gotten a single fatal exception errors while using epsxe. I find crashes only happen when I use bad drivers or overclock something. And where I live (Toronto) power outages are very rare so I don't have to worry about that. I realize it's good to have backup (I use save states and normal saves concurrently in SNES RPGs) but I just don't use it for epsxe.

That's good that you don't have any problems with the saves, but the rest of us do, I lost dozens of hours of gameplay because of crashes of the emu, power shortages and the like. You could say I'm a bit burned by those things ;)
Btw, all the snes emus save the sram data evey 8 or 16 sec to disk, so you won't have any problems with that, if only ePSXe did that...
