Beginner? The first RPG I played was Final Fantasy I, and I loved it right away! And yes I do like Mystic Quest. Quest 64 is truly a horrible game.

Glad to see that there are others who like Mystic Quest, besides myself.. Granted, it is not up to FF VII or FF IX's standards, but its a nice little game for someone who wants to get their "feet wet" in RPGS. The worst RPG(s) ever, for me it would have to be Vagrant Story and FF VIII. Ughh!!!!!, just thinking about those two makes me want to :spy: Now, I realise that this is only my opinion, but it truly is how I feel about these two games.

i didn't find anything wrong with FF: Mystic Quest. i did however have a problem with FF3 (jap) with the main characters being quadruplet brothers. i also didnt like how FF1 had the thing where the character wouldn't attack a different monster even if the one they were originally assigned to attack had died. that was pretty dumb. but as for newer games (PSX and later), i haven't played one that has offended me greatly.

Aww man, you've treated on territory that few people live to tell about... I take that personally... Just for that... I'm going to put quotes from these games here!!! :D

"Try to catch me Ashley Riot!"
"You haven't got any truth in yourself!" ~ Sydney Losstarot

"We're all SeeD's here. We'll act accordingly"
"Whatever" ~ Squall Leonhart

So there! :D

Anyway, I like Mystic Quest. I thought it was cool. FF4 through FF8 were all excellent games. I wasn't much into FF9 because I just couldn't get into the characters, or the storyline...

And the fact that most of everyone in Final Fantasy X is dead, going to die, or never existed in the first place really bothered me. I haven't beaten FFX myself(I'm at the very end), but I know what happens(posts without spoiler markers do wonders  ). Tidus disappears because of the whole Fayth/dream thing, Auron gets sent, and I think Yuna might die(not entirely sure 'bout that since I haven't heard anyone speak of it, but this is what the game will have you believe through most of it). C'mon guys... The good guys are supposed to triumph, and walk away HAPPY, like in FF8. So OK, I'll rephrase my statement... I have problems with the FFX ending, not the game itself. Because I really did have a lot of fun with that game... The sphere grid idea was beautifully done, MOST of the voice acting was top notch(Gotta love Wakka's accent, and Auron's almost-raspy voice. And who can forget Rikku's spunky voice, or Tidus' cheery "Told ya!"). I really had a lot of fun with that game... But the whole "Cycle of Death" thing really got to me...

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is cool. It got me and my brother interested in RPG's. AS for worst RPG, I'd say it's a three-way tie between Secret of Evermore for SNES, Shadowrun for SNES, and Pokemon for any system

So what if Square USA made it? I still think it's a good game. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's a bad game.

Secret of Evermore WAS a great game! it had more japanese inflence than MQ though..youd think they help out more with FFMQ but back then FF wasnt as big a name to live up to as it is today

i also didnt like how FF1 had the thing where the character wouldn't attack a different monster even if the one they were originally assigned to attack had died.
A tradition alive and well in Golden Sun.

Final Fantasy 1 was the first rpg I played but I didn't initially like it. It needed some time to grow on me.

Square USA is not sunsoft. Just wanted to make that clear. The above message seems to be pointing at it.

I enjoyed MQ and Quest 64 but I do hate the gameboy quest game that isn't an rpg. I am surprised that some hate one and like the other. Aren't they filling the same niche?

I'd go for Final Fantasy Legend 1 as the worst rpg but I love the game.(a love-hate relationship) The limits on weapons and those expensive heart containers you need to revive members are the two factors which give it such a title for me. Furthest I got was the third world, only one member barely alive, and maybe no or one heart container for her. I didn't have enough to buy any of the blasted hearts, and not enough of a force to climb down the tower or battle against the current world's monsters for money.

I happened to like Mystic Quest as well. It was one of the first console RPGs I played and it's simplified game mechanics are great for beginners. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was made entirely by Square Japan, not Square USA (infact Mystic Quest was released in Japan before it was released in the US, Secret of Evermore was never released in Japan. I don't know where you heard that Secret of Evermore had more Japanese influence than Mystic Quest, because I'm pretty certain you're wrong. Anyways it doesn't really matter, good games are good games and bad games are bad games regardless of where they're made.

sxamiga
February 12th, 2002, 02:39
I would say that you have point there flatbush27, about Secret of the Stars. Way back when this game was new and Nintendo was hyping it in Nintendo Power Magazine, none of the stores around where I live carried it and most of them had not even heard of it. Finally, at one store, I was told that the reason that stores did not carry this game, is that it was not very good and that they didn't want to get stuck with it sitting on their shelves. So I would say, if that doesn't qualify for one of the worst RPGS made, or perhaps, the worst, what does?
sincerely,

MQ and quest64 both sucked. Quest deserves a little credit though, because it was the first or second RPG to come out on the N64 back when that was new.
Secret of Evermore seemed like a great game when I played it, but I never figured out what to do after I found myself in that first dessert right after you get warped or something.
The whole Phantasy star series on the genesis, in my opinion, sucked. Mainly because I just didn't like the genesis, but it also didn't have a very good battle system, the most important part of an RPG.

Kane
February 12th, 2002, 11:45
Actualy I think that MQ might actualy pip it to the post owing to the fact that it is a smear on an otherwise pretty much unblemished record for the ff series

SNES; didn't even know there was a gen version

Ryos
February 14th, 2002, 07:22
I disagree. I thought the SNES version of Shadowrun was fairly fun (I wouldn't put it on any of my top lists or anything). The Genesis one was quite annoying. That game puts the emphasis of leveling to a ridiculous extreme.

Lyrai
February 28th, 2002, 03:59
I've never played the Genesis version so I know nothing about it. But the SNES one had a bad aiming/moving system You had to use the control pad to move the aiming cursor. (I think, it's been awhile since I've played it) If you could use the SNES mouse in conjuncion w/ the pad it woiuld have been better.

shadowrun was one of my preferred games for the snes, it lost some of its charm in the sega version

the worst rpg? id say final fantasy mystic quest, i stopped playing it really early cause i couldnt take the cheesyness anymore, i mean seriously the game starts with a dark knight waking up and saying: I am in a bad mood I will take over earth!! hahaha !! haha!

This could turn into a poll !
I played quest 64, but got bored in the middle....there are worse games... like vandal hearts (PSX).
FF MQ is also bad, but we were talking about snes console in the early years...we have to give it a discount... ;)
Now, the bad games are the ones that have crappy graphics (considering the console) and a lowsy strory... and no sidequests and/or cool secrets likevandal hearts...
Secret of Evermore is average, i got till the end...(then the emu crashed in the final scenes when all is well when it ends well.....) but i didn't like the mazes and so on...

Mystic Quest was what got me first introduced into the Final Fantasy Series. It was simple, and easy to follow. (Plus the dragon claw was pretty cool) As for the shadowrun cursor, It's like trying to play Half-Life or Quake using only the keyboard.

Chrono Trigger is wicked, its among my top 5 all time best... I've beaten it many times, ive played from the begining to end about 10 times over, my favourite characters are 1: Magus 2: Kaeru (frog/glenn) 3: Chrono i guess

I used the japenese spelling Chrono in japanese Crono in english... the japanese could fit 2 letters into 1 character space and then when they translated it they took out the h in the english version...

I'm sure I'll get crucified for this but I actually think FF 1 was one of the worst RPG's. Sure it was back in the NES days when nothing was particularly awesome, and most people were new to the concept of a videogame RPG, but even still. It was VERY poorly translated, had a crappy plot, no character development, endless battles, and poor graphics and sound. For those of us who had grown used to early IBM and Commodore 64/128 RPG's like the Ultima series, Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, etc. FF1 was pretty sad in comparison.

I will say this though, while I think FF1 sucks, FF6 and FF7 are definitely my favorite RPG's of all time, and I am a bonafide RPG (and FF addict) - I've played and completed all FF's 1-9 (haven't gotten my hands on a PS2 yet to play FFX) and yes, even MQ (which I didn't think was terrible - and was a good marketing decision to get young kids a taste of an RPG - look how many people say MQ was their first real console RPG).
