I am so going to have to agree with Ryos that Planescape: Torment is one of the awesomest games available out there. I just find it a pity that there probably won't be anything anywhere near that cool available for a long time. Alice is another game that I rate as really cool as well. And the original Zork just for this line "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue."

At the moment, RETURN TO CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN. If you were a diehard fanatic of the first one (the gfx were horrible tho), you'll like this one. Others that would make it to my list would be DIABLO II+LOD Expansion, GIANTS: CITIZEN KABUTO (yoo gunna luv this one, mate! Troi it!),AQUANOX, UNREAL TOURNAMENT and QUAKE III.

First-person shooter: Soldier of Fortune, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Unreal Tournament

Third-person shooter: Max Payne

Real-time strategy: C&C Red Alert 2, Starcraft

Space simulator: FreeSpace 2, FreeSpace, Descent 3

My favourites I've highlighted in bold. The best PC game overall (for me) would have to be FreeSpace 2, followed closely by Max Payne and SOF (tie for second).

Alice is really cool though not all that challenging unfortunately.s I recommend playing it right from the start on the highest difficulty level 'cause if you know how to use your mouse at all their level design makes it just so extremely easy to take advantage of the bugs in their ai. Pity EA screwed Rogue over, as I personally found the artistic direction in this one awesome and would have liked to see more games from them.

Duke Nukem 3D: There was a lot of cool stuff that can be done in the game that Doom couldn't do. (Eg. Break the toliets, Pipe Bombs etc.) Duke also had more style than Doom. It was somewhat cool hearing Duke say "Hail to the king Baby!". Not to mention all the parodies that was in the game. (Eg. Star Wars, O.J Simpson, etc)

Septerra Core?! ::gag:: I played about 10 mins of that game until I actually got into a battle, and I laughed so hard.. it was so bad. The battle system is nothing like FF7's, there are no menu's, you just click your stupid picture when you're done "charging" for an attack, then click on an enemy and watch in horror as your character does a 3-frame repeated animation attack sequence and hope it doesnt last that long. I wont even mention the fact that you jump about 50 feet in the air to compensate for where your chatacter was placed when the battle started, whoops, I just did mention it.

I'll agree that the story was one of the best I've seen. A "planet" with 7 moving layers revolving around a central core.. the closest idea I've seen to that would be something like Tales of Destiny 2 or Chrono Trigger's time warping idea. I stopped playing after about an hour of play and havent touched it since, but its still installed, maybe before I commit suicide I might play it again.

Did you get that game in a 2-game pack with Shogo? The 10 bucks was worth it for Shogo, but Septerra Core is a joke.

I define "coolest" as something that is most unusual, yet enjoyable.

Not necessarily favourite, or played most, or best looking... just coolest.

I don't think FPS are "cool", altho they are good in many other ways. Quake II, Jedi Knight (1), Descent series, Duke Nukem 3D, Doom etc. were all great exercises.

I don't think racing games are "cool". They are very satisfying simulation of the real thing... :heh:

I don't think strategies are "cool". They give me a good workout on the brain, which is entertaining.

I don't think adventures/RPGs are "cool". They are interesting stories to interact in.

So WTF is cool for me? Actually still a lot. One example:
How about choosing from a fleet of space fighters to fly into alien planets to accomplish various missions. Without worrying about the targetting system or numerous other technical problems. Throw in a familiar setting, with the best music from the movie industries. Better yet a little bit of storyline.
You may have forgotten it, but Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is one of the coolest games I have played on the PC.

I thought carma1 is more of a classic. carma2 has the 3d peds (or pedestrians :heh: ) that bounce on your hood, but still not as bloody as those sprites in the original... and I'm not too sure about all the parts flying out of the car either.

Speaking of which, why no other developer is brave enough to let peds die? That is what makes the game cool :evil:
Midtown Madness, Crazy Taxi, ... even Wreckless, all have those super humans that can never be run over :bash:

BTW, despite the above, Wreckless is kinda cool too.

correction: In Return Fire you can run over soldiers with your Jeep or tank... I wonder if that's where the idea of carma came from.
