Report: New DS arriving this year

[UPDATE] Japanese media says Mario Factory will introduce camera, music playback, and better wireless into next revision of popular portable hardware; Nintendo cries "speculation."

Earlier this year, Nintendo projected hardware sales of its DS handheld system to total 28 million for the current fiscal year. While that can be considered a massively successful year, it is down slightly from the 30 million portable game players the company sold last year. That anticipated slowdown led one industry analyst to predict a new iteration of the DS hardware is on the way, while another had been expecting such a redesign since last November.

Today, Japanese news site Nikkei Net (subscription required) is reporting that the time has finally come for Nintendo to roll out another new DS and that the system will arrive in Japan by the end of the year. Planned features for the unnamed DS revision include a camera function, music playback, and improved wireless capabilities. No mention was made of previously speculated upgrades, such as larger screens, enhanced memory, or a smaller size.

Nikkei expects the redesigned system to carry a price tag of about Ĩ20,000 ($188), somewhat higher than the Ĩ16,800 ($158) Nintendo currently charges for the first redesign of its popular portable, the DS Lite. The new system will reportedly arrive on Japanese store shelves by the end of the year.

[UPDATE] Not so fast, says Nintendo of America. In a statement issued to GameSpot, a Nintendo representative labeled Nikkei Net's report as unconfirmed speculation that was not based on any information given out by the Kyoto, Japan-headquartered company.

"The Nikkei newspaper wrote a recent story about a DS solely based upon their own research and speculation, without interviewing Nintendo," said the game company. "While Nintendo is always working on new hardware, we have not made any announcement about a DS and we cannot comment on the Nikkei story."

Cool =D. I still have my fat DS. I dont know if i should get a new one. Mine have a small crack on the lower screen and the Left Trigger is not responding very well plus its full of puppy bites. But it still works. I dunno, i will wait to see how it looks and if there is another price cut.

Good thing I wait forever before buying a console. Where's the TV connect like PSP though?

As much as I love the DS, they need to stop milking it and come out with a new handheld console.

I'm happy with my DS Lite, but I remember they were going to take Game Boy Advance support out of the next DS, that was part of the reason I purchased a DS Lite now.

I can't fault the DS Lite, it plays enough games for me at the moment and I can't see a reason to buy another portable...

So if nintendo released a new handheld with a bigger touchscreen and far better gfx capability you would see the reaosn for it?

Not really, I like the DS Lite I have, It would take a lot to make me want a new portable. The PSP is superior in many was to the DS and I don't want it...

I hate to say it, but it just seems like they're adding stuff that the PSP has already so that they can try to compete better with it. I just don't see it working now, as PSP owners have had these capabilities for quite some time now, and anyone that was looking for a handheld to do these sorts of things would have probably just bought a PSP by now.

Y'know I like the idea that there creating new designs, it will probably appeal more to the younger generation more then the older ones. I might buy this one if the price isn't too high

You're damn right. To this day, I'll never understand the logic behind it's design: It's already handheld and the SP version is the exact size it ought to be, so why make a micro version which you'll loose, you'll never be able to see clearly, and never be able to use Gameboy games. GBA Micro is, in my opinion the worst gaming product Nintendo have ever made... No wait, I've just remembered the Virtual Boy. Now that's epic fail... Or at least, the closest Nintendo have ever gotten to 'epic fail.' How you measure 'epic' failure is still beyond me.

Yeah, I thought the Micro was a stupid idea but the Virtua Boy gave me headaches. I wanted to like it, but how can you like a system that makes you sick?

:dead:

I didn't like the Advance either, it needed a backlight. I love the GBA SP and the DS Lite, both are my favorite Gameboy systems.

And even if you did overcome the headaches and grow to like it, there are only 22 games available (and not even all of them were released outside Japan) so you're basically screwed over anyway.

I own a Gamegear *2 actually* and only have ~7 games for it. I also own an Atari Lynx *near dead* and 4 games for it. So it'd be possible for me to own a system with just a few games.

I have the Micro and I love it. To each his own I guess. I highly prefer it over the SP though in every way, other than it can't play gameboy games. It is actually my favorite gameboy design yet, though the DS Lite is way of there too.

Those of you who bash Nintendo for releasing a third DS are IDIOTS. Why? Sony is doing the same thing! None of you mentioned that. And what about Microsoft? HOLY SHI*! Xbox 360 basic, premium, arcade and elite. And letīs not forget the game bundles! If THAT is not milking, i donīt know what is.
