Hmm... a bit? Not really noticeable unless you are playing PCSX2.

Theoretically, the difference in performance should be proportional to the difference in L2 cache size (if all other specs are the same). But that isn't how it actually works

I got confused reading that.
Anyways, between 4mb and 6mb cache difference...you probably wouldn't notice. The big thing is the speed at stock. The E8400 is just superior and you'll definitely notice a decline in performance.

Unless your E8400 was at around 4Ghz, then you shouldn't notice any difference.

Out of curiosity, how did it "burn down"? Did you give it too many volts?
To answer your question, I've never used an E6600, but I'd say yes, it will make a difference. I notice quite a difference from 3GHz to 4GHz, not counting the small improvements 45nm CPUs have over 65nm CPUs clock for clock, but it won't realistically be a big one, so it's nothing to worry over. The L2 cache makes a difference with the Core 2 architecture, especially with games and such, but it's really only if it's low (say, 2MB or less) that it's to the point of being considered a hindering. Otherwise, more is just better, but nothing that will make a world of difference.

better now? :D That was just a brief post I made before going to bed, kinda did it in a rush. here's the re-phrased one:
