Well after getting over my CDROM troubles, after formatting I now have a jumpy mouse on my hands. It just can't seem to move well with fast motions. Its the standard MS wheel mouse, with the proper drivers, the ball is clean and everything. This happens once every few formats... does anyone know how to fix this?

Since you mention that it happens primarily after an install of Windows, could it be a resource conflict brought about by PnP? Go to Device Manager and see if your mouse is sharing an IRQ. While ordinarily IRQ sharing works perfectly fine with mice, it's about the only thing that springs to mind.

Hmm yeah I looked into that, but doesn't really seem to be the cause. COM2 and 1 are in fact sharing the same IRQ, but even removing COM2 or reassigning the IRQ doesn't do the trick. There is no device on COM2 either. Damn.

Ah ha... I've isolated the problem to Wingate. Immediately after installing this program the mouse starts jumping around. I have no idea why since it has never happened before with Wingate, but after 4 formats in the past 2 days each time it was Wingate; I guess I just didn't think it was possible... only question is what other options do I have? Is it possible to use microsoft internet sharing on cable modems?

yes, internet sharing from MS works on cable modems.

I take it that you have Win ME then. In which case I am not surprised. When I first got my network cards they came with this program and it cause no ends of problems and I was using ME at the time. It wasn't the mouse in my case though it was the modem. ME refused point blank to even detect it after installing wingate. Then I got sense and got Win 2k.

Oh man I am really getting pissed now. Actually I'm running Win 98SE, and have all the latest drivers, Direct X, system updates, etc. but the mouse is still erratic. I reformatted *again* (that's number 5 folks) without installing wingate, but I have the same problem. I guess it was just a coincidence that Wingate seemed to mess it up every time. Or maybe it's something to do with the NICs. I'm gonna try getting a PS/2 header for my motherboard instead of using the serial adapter. One weird thing is that no matter what, my OEM MS IntelliMouse won't work and my retail MS Wheel mouse does when using the adapter so I'm hoping a PS/2 header will resolve the problem for both. Thanks to everyone for their help.

Well I bought and installed the header and it *sort of* cleared up the problem. The mouse now works MUCH better, but still jumps from when doing extremely fast movements. This is weird. Maybe it's the mouse but it works fine in other computers, fast motion and all. Or perhaps it is the crappy PC Partner motherboard. In any case, my mission objective of making Unreal Tournament playable is now complete. As always, thanks for the help.
