I was just about to reply, saying that you didn't need anything ingame to save the game, but then I realized it was a valid question - I've played the game before, but by mistake forgot that there were savepoints. Also, I removed read-only from the memcard folder and everything in it, and saving is working fine now. Thanks a bundle

P.S. If I had played the game a little longer without panicking about saving at the beginning I would have never posted this - is there any way I can remove the entire thread?
