Saving progress using ePSXe

Hi - I was wondering (and sorry if this has been covered by another thread), how does one normally save a game using ePSXe? To put that better, are the default memory card files (epsxe000.mcr and epsxe001.mcr) set to work automatically? I configured everything properly (or at least properly enough to get the game running), but when I start a new game and get past the intro to a save-able area and try to save, the save option is in grey and I can't select it (typical of a playstation without a memory card inserted). ePSXe seems to support the save function and Legend of Legaia (the game in question), but is there something that I need to do in order to have the game acknowledge that there is a memory card and that it is able to save in it?

When I try to load a game from either of the default blank .mcr files (using the game's continue option at the startup screen), the game will access it and show a bunch of empty slots, but it seems that it won't let me save a game's progress - does anyone have any ideas about this?

Thanks
