I tried both those options on a similar box once... took about 1 1/2 days to get through the text-based install with both OS's... however, Mandrake seemed to run just fine after it was (finally) installed. I gave up on Fedora when it seemed to be suffering the same symptoms Mandrake had when I had installed it. If you go linux, get something that installs quick and has little to no bloat (slackware/debian). I was able to install a working copy of debian and only take up 32M on my hard drive on that same machine (install was only 5 minutes compared to 1 1/2 days). Just something to think about .
