BTW, there is a nice shortcut to adjust the wand threshold:
While the wand tool is selected, press and hold the left button on the area you want to select. Then while still holding the left button, move the mouse left and right to adjust the threshold.
Also, for situations where the wand doesn't work, the bezier (aka path) selection tool is an excellent choice. Much better than the lasso IMHO. It allows you to build complex selections step by step. It is also a great way to create objects as well, a very versitile tool.
