For all the examples of open-source projects that were failures, there are other examples of ones that were successes. Look at zsnes and snes9x, for example.

Oh, and don't dismiss PCSX. I use it and it's great. Far more reliable than ePSXe on my system (I'm suspecting binary compatibility issues with my Linux distro).
I believe Elly said "ports to other OSes without giving credit.", I can definately see why an emu author wouldn't want that.
