i'm a big square fan, and I don't like this at all.
It's not done by the creators, but by the translators who have been given too much creative freedom.

This isn't the only sci-fi reference they fitted in there. Before you fight the ultimate boss, you get that "fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering" crap that was the premise for Star Wars: Episode 1,
I hate the way that travesty of a movie has tarnished this square game.

There are times when Japanese do insert references here and there. Silent Hill is a good example.. But I can assure you that these lame star wars/star trek references are not present in the original Japanese game.
Nor that squall/cloud "pun".. since those names do not have the same double meaning, and therefore cannot work in the Japanese language.
Dumb translators.. They should just do their job.
