Well, its up to the emu author himself
Sure, Open Source will make a good start to anyone intersted to start his own emulator by looking at another source and see how does an emu work. Not to mention that the amount of contribution that project can get from various other coders
On the other hand, going Open Source might lead to many rip offs and ports to other OS/gaming systems without taking the permission of the author, and such acts are the main reason why some coders persist that their emu's source remain closed.
