I think that the fact that it was proprietary had more to do with the death of Betamax, than marketing did. Sony might be the biggest electronics company, but when you have Philips, Toshiba, etc all against you, you're gonna lose. If Sony would have been willing to license the technology out, I doubt VHS ever would have come into being...
