It did clear things up nicely at the end, but that doesn't mean that I would like to play the earlier games. Kind of like seeing Star Wars Episode IV. You really do want to learn what happened before and after, even though the movie cleared things up nicely at the end.

well, maybe its just me. When i saw all these "unexplainable" events that take place, and how the game moves from one era to another without you releasing that is just one of the good parts of Xenogears. Its like watching "Training day" were you have question yourself 100 times before knowing the real story at the very end
