I think the real reason they lost money was two reasons:
a) The ports were shabby (The FF7 MDECs looked so crappy, and the music in both games was poor even in comparison to the PSX)
b) The Games looked quie poor in comparison to games that were on the PC at the time.

PC Gamers today would want MP3 music, movies at least on a par with FF8 (now that was a good idea, using the bink codec), and graphics taht look half decent on an average spec machine.
Hi res fonts just don't cut it. We need higher avaliable resoloutions (up to at lease 1280x1024), if they have to use 2d backdrops, at least filter them using a half decent algorithm.
They should also have better used the D3D API, rather than trying what they did. The API is there for a reason.
FFX, looking like it does on the PS2, with the possibility of higher resoloutions might appeal far more to PC gamers. If they weren't too lazy, some of the 'framebufer' style effects could be done using DX 8 shaders.
