Yeah, that was also what Sony tried to do with Crash Bandicoot, especially in their US marketing campaign. Trying to make him rebellious, funny, witty and cool and to out-Sonic, Sonic. I guess it kinda worked too, cause Crash Bandicoot looks like a big doofy weird kiddy character, yet Crash has more credibility and less kiddy feeling among non-kids. Although he obviously never got as popular as Sonic or even close, but still.
