I think both systems have a good share of both "kiddy" and "mature" games. Mature should not been something superficial like how much blood and gore it has, or how much profanity, violence, and sexuality... but I would define mature as something that will not be as enjoyable to the typical younger player. For instance, Xenogears could be considered a mature game.
It's not that GCN has kiddy games, it's that Nintendo's games tend to have a kiddy element to them, but that doesn't mean they're only enjoyable to little kids. Quite the contrary, they appeal to all age groups. They just tend to be "kid friendly", so to speak, and nothing's really wrong with that. They tend to be colorful, inoffensive, and noncontroversial, but not lacking in challenge or gameplay.
As far as Nintendo-like games go, they're good for the market, but they're definitely not the only things that should be out there. There's a place for those type of games, and there's a place for games that are of a deeper nature. Undoubtedly deeper games have their benefits to certain demographics.
The only truly kiddy games we could do without are those that are simply milking a label that appeals to children, or tries to offer some weak "edutainment" value to draw in parents.
