You're right (well sort of). Today Games are more likely disappointing. They made games today only to show you that 'A' game has the best and beautiful graphics than others. They only want to maximum the ability of today's hardware. And forgetting other part that makes a game a real game. They want more and more money (well, arent we all?) from their games and forgetting the core of their games.
Past Games/Old games are still the best (ok, the graphics may sucked compared to what you've seen today) but if you're asking about real gameplay, hours of fun, and the gamers rejoice, nothing can beat the old skool games.
Imagine Super Mario Bros, FF1-6, DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, ZeroType, etc....
