Old RAM technology is more expensive than recent RAM technology.

I used to compress files at high levels. More RAM is required to use very high compression levels. If I have 2 GB only and my compression needs 1500 MB. I have to close some app and so there is no freedom in doing it. That is in Windows XP. If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7 then forget about it.

I agree that the optimal amount of RAM now days should be 4 GB. Just look at newegg.com, most of the computers and even laptops have at least 4 GB of RAM.
