A lot of people have switched to Vista simply because it's "new". Some have noticed a startup and application startup speed increase, so they continue to use Vista over XP.
For me, it was an overall slowdown, especially in gaming and video encoding. Some of my AVISynth video scripts use just over 2GB of RAM and of course Vista continued to try and use as much RAM for itself as possible. I'm sure things have improved a bit since the release of SP2, but I switched back to XP in less than a week of using Vista. Once Windows 7 came out, I've been using it instead of XP. It's everything Vista
should have been, considering all of the hype around its release. I don't mind that I'm using an unfinished OS as my primary OS. To me, Windows 7 is that good and I will purchase my own copy when it's released.
As for XP crashing, it's most likely one of your drivers. Considering the laptop's age, I'd say it's one of the drivers that's just old and buggy.
