You do realize you're comparing a game that's got alot of custom content out for it versus one that was just released, right? I notice your argument fell back only to the custom content The Sims 2 had, not the base game. That is where The Sims 3 really surpasses The Sims 2, and even with some custom stuff added, it's still not as good. It's not like The Sims 3 won't get more stuff in time either.
For now, the lack of stuff will make it seem like a step back to anyone with a whole boatload of stuff on The Sims 2, but The Sims 3 really does improve alot. Almost most importantly, EA seems to have noticed the want for customization and matching. You can style almost anything in alot of ways. There's some things that are steps back, like the Sims not getting into cars, and the lack of stuff versus The Sims 2 and everything available for it now may make the game seem unfinished, but that's grabbing at straws. You feel more immersed with the whole town being loaded and the whole world going on around you versus just one lot (with either fog or poorly detailed blurry blocky buildings in the background), and the time of day subtly changing (rather than either just day or night) adds to the immersion, and the graphics themselves are quite a bit better (not as much technically as visually, but it's the latter that matters anyway).
I'm not even a heavy player of the games and I disagree with your "skip this sequel" comment.
Edit: By the way, to the topic starter, both the controls and camera work just as they did in The Sims 2, no? The only difference I found was the sensitivity for camera when rotating seemed lower, but it's not a deal breaker.
