Here is a saved state showing the error in action.
It seems certain stages may cause this error including the vs screen.

It is very wierd it seems to load all the time no matter thae stage if at least one character does not have a partner ie a semi-boss type character so there are only a total of 3 characters but when there are 4 characters it seems to almost always crash
