I think its actually more complicated than that. There's also the pre-rendered group which preferred the fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backgrounds of the PSX era than real-time 3d or top down 2d.

On a more serious note, as far as I remember it is done using gameshark and was nothing special, Aerith remains dead story-wise and only appears during enemy encounters.
