Nanaki was incredibly useful from the time he joins the party up until the end of the game really, unless you get to lvl99 and unlock every other character's limit breaks. Only then is his usefulness overshadowed by the chars that get multi-hit limits. His Speed rating was through the roof and cast Haste and put some speed boosting items and use all your Speed Tabs on him and he's killer. When I play through the game, he's the first one to give sure-fire 9999 damage hits because his lvl4 limit is the first to be unlocked.
Regarding Chrono Trigger, you need to assess the game IN CONTEXT to when it came out. The game was earth-shattering for many reasons.
1. What a relief it was to play a full-blown RPG without having to deal with random encounters. The first RPG I played was Dragon Warrior, and it got me hooked on the genre. By 1995 I'd played Lufia 1-2, Breath of Fire 1-2, Phantasy Star 3-4, FF1,4,6, DQ1-4, and random battles were just getting tedious you know? Well how bad ass was it to wander around the world map and stare at the pretty graphics, listen to the cool music, and explore the towns? You could argue that it made the game a little too easy, but who cares?
2. Yasunori Mitsuda
3. HUGE leap in graphics department
4. Crono Goku factor
5. Tech system was sweet
6. No matter what anyone says, the characters were well developed. Each and every one had a back story. I would concur that Crono being mute subtracts slightly.
I hope it's obvious by now that the first time I played through CT I was completely blown away. It goes a little further than "save princess" if you played any more than 10 minutes into it. The game is legendary and rightfully so — I will not be persuaded otherwise by someone who was in diapers when the game came out. I hope I speak for everyone who played it back then.

Yep. God Is Dead. It's no secret that the core FF team is dissolved. Sakaguchi's gone, Nobuo's in-and-out, (and Kitase wasn't involved in XII) Yosh
itaka Amano also has been barfing up some weird ****. Vaan and Tidus's shorts come to mind. I don't know how they make money regurgitating all these remakes for portable systems. Remake VII dammit.
Btw, stay tuned because I still have to post my rant about XII. I haven't collected my thoughts yet, because honestly, anything to do with the game's just not really worth my time. So maybe I won't post a rant about it. Who knows.
