The strange thing about FFVII, VIII and X is that it really all came down to what their limit breaks were. I remember magic as being pretty useless (other than healing spells), so everybody went melee. And since limit breaks was where the damage was at, that's where characters were chosen. I'd never use RedXIII, Tifa, Vincent, Zell, Irvine, Selphie, Quistis, Lulu, Rikku and the uh... blue guy, for example because they were just so below par.
