Xp + N-lite is the way to go.
At risk of being tiresome and repetive, my custom n-lited windows-install-disc (At about 150-200 MB) is the best darn thing i have ever run, and have been doing so for about a year.
No issues, and every shutdown and boot is as quick and instant as the first one were.
internet explorer gone,
commandline-tools gone,
firefox 2 slipstreamed
fresh enough nvidia-drivers slipstreamed (fresh enough for my system)
theme-support gone.
indexing gone.
about 10-15 services, not disabled but completely removed as _i_ don't need them.
And a lot of configuration done already.
And much more details.
I run no firewall or antivirus software, and surfs with my trusted router and common sense and cautios experience.
I am a system-performance addict, and the bottom-line is that my system is a gift from above.
- I'll promise to stop "bragging" about it from here on forward.
