Also, theyre using people hdd space and bandwidth without providing retribution. That would be the same as having ads served from your computers to the people viewing those ads. Plainly unacceptable.

You don't need to provide HDD space, but you can get some additional space if you do so.
I don't do this and it works still good.

Here, your files are basically just spread across more than one point (this makes it difficult if not impossible to control the flow of these files, regardless of whether these are "encrypted" or not).
