Well, I should make it clear that the "normal gameplay problems" are very, very hard to distinguish unless one is carefully observant. It's probably noteworthy to mention that the only games I have tried in pSX using this controller configuration are Breath of Fire IV and Suikoden II. I have only played Suikoden II for a few minutes on it, but I've been through at least half of Breath of Fire IV. I didn't noticed the issue in Breath of Fire IV, but I don't think that holds any credibility as there is a slight command delay in the game's engine, making this little glitch unobservable.
I should also mention that my PS2 controller adapter (though it was advertised) doesn't support rumble. I'm not sure if that would change anything that patrickp described though.
