I layed my first one on my bed for a majority of the time when I had it (about 3 or 4 years ago). I learned about the horrors of laptop overheating because of that. Now I keep it layed flat on my wooden coffee table in the family room. I'm not taking anymore chances now since I just dished out about $450 cash today ($20 laptop HD USB case (to salvage my important files that are still on my other laptop HD) and a $30 desktop HD USB case for my other computer that crashed on me). So now I am always going to use my cooling fan.
