i doubt it does much, as nVidia has been releasing many cards with 256bit bandwidth, and if it was really important, they would have stuck to the 384bit bandwidth from the 8800Ultra.

It does when there is enough GFX Memory to require it.
by this i mean that a video card with 1GB of 512Bit memory running at 2.0GHZ, will run much faster then 1GB of 256Bit memory running at 2.0Ghz,
But even then that is limited by the Memory controller in use. current video cards tend to use Quad channel controllers, (i believe ati's ringbus is 8-way)
So a 512mb Nvidia card would be 128x4, while an ati 512mb card would be 64x8.
correct me if im wrong.
obviously addressing 64mb chunks via 8 paths would be quicker then addressing 128mbs via 4
