well i would just use existing software.
the rule of coding my programming professor taught me is "don't reinvent the wheel"
meaning, don't code something thats already been done when you can just re-use existing code.
i don't really like that saying, as re-coding things is a good learning experience.
but in your case, i think you should just use existing software.
most-likely, there would be ways to customize the forum so it would look more original.
i would offer to help out, but i have very-little experience with webdevelopment... i've only made a few simple webpages back in highschool
