So why do you want to switch to winamp. If you must switch I would say foobar2000 but I'm not sure why you would. I have been using winamp for ... like a decade almost. I'm using plugins from 1998 that still work and winamp takes less than 1% of my cpu at all times (well maybe except when using 64th note). If its cause you need something for linux you could always use wine but then your cpu usage will go way up. Or you could try XMMS which was already stated but that's a poor substitute for winamps plugin awesomeness. I just see no reason to switch when there is no better alternative in terms of compatibility.
My friends tell me iTunes plays mp3s well ... lol.
PS: If you want I can send you my plugin directory. Should support almost all console formats at top notch quality.
