Well, that's the price for the standalone game. It comes cheaper if you get the orange box completely.

Why the hate? You need a internet connection to play the game anyway, and Steam doesn't do anything special (as far as I can see) that warrant being ignored that bad

(You can always get the box version tho, I guess. No idea if it forces Steam or not on you. But hating that bad for so small reasons just make you miss on great games for no real reasons.)
