Proper way to close program in fullscreen?

I've been playing Disgaea 2, and it's been running flawlessly, but I just have one stupid question. I'm not really sure how to close the program properly when I'm running it in fullscreen.

I usually just use alt+f4 when I'm done, but this produces some weird problems. Unless I reboot my computer, the next time I try to play the game I get weird little graphical glitches, and for some reason it sometimes resets my CPU settings to unlimited FPS (which is sort of a pain in a game like Disgaea, if you don't like to hear dialogue spoken at 2x the normal speed).

I've tried using the escape key, but that's caused my computer to lock up in the past...

When I play in windowed mode, it seems fine. I can just close the window behind the actual game window, with the scrolling text, and that seems to do a nice clean job.

Is there some keyboard shortcut or something to safely exit the program in fullscreen though?
