Microsoft's problem is that they left Windows XP in the market for too long before releasing Vista (which isn't as bad as people make out).
The gap between XP's release and Vista is the longest time they have ever gone without releasing an operating system at six years, they've given Windows XP too long a time to become embedded and most of the flaws have become ironed out or gotten used to.
I wonder if Vista would be getting so much flak if Microsoft had released a bastard child upgrade of XP onto the market to fill the gap, just like they did with releasing Windows ME (which was basically just Windows 98 3rd Edition).
