Seems the thermal throttling was working as intended. I've seen a video on youtube where, I think it was Tomshardware, were doing some Quake 3 stress testing, only to remove the heatsink during the test. The AMD CPU smoked (athlon XP I think), but the Intel P4 survived.
They had an FPS counter in it, and you could see the framerate drop into single digits for the P4, but it did survive.
