Yes, you can do that in pSX, too, jonc2006. But I've got an even easier solution - I use a Logitech Rumblepad 2, and this has a Mode button that allows the user to swap functions between the directional pad and the first analog stick. It's an excellent controller anyway, but ironically, it has one of the best directional pads I've come across. I believe some versions of the Logitech Dual Action pad have a Mode button, too.
