right but what i was trying to get across was that it is a reckless idea to only use one of the two saving methods. when i first started using epsxe a few years ago i had lost my progress due to the save states getiting corrupted and i wasnt aware of what the cause was this until the 2nd time it happened to me. i did realize that those things can get corrupted and cease to work. and yeah this applies to memory card saves to some degree as well but save states seem to be a bit more error prone. so imo its best to use both methods regardless, even if it is not an extremely common thing. the fact that this sort of thing can happen and some of the less-than-desirable consiquences it produces are more than enough reason to play it safe.
